Chapter 5 - CRACKS IN THE ARMOR

As weeks turned into months, the cold winter began to yield to early spring. Life inside the Moretti estate took on an unusual, almost domestic rhythm that stunned the estate's long-term staff.

Alessandro, a man who used to take his dinners alone in his stark office while reviewing financial ledgers and intelligence reports, found himself walking through the gardens during his lunch breaks. More often than not, he would find Emma sitting on the grass with a sketchbook, drawing nonsensical shapes while Bruno sat beside her like a massive, furry guardian statue.

One afternoon, Alessandro stood on the patio, holding a mug of dark coffee. Emma spotted him and waved frantically with both arms.

"Mr. Boss Man! Look!" she called out in her bright, clear voice.

Alessandro blinked, surprised by the nickname. He walked over, his polished leather shoes crunching softly on the gravel path. "What is it, small one?"

"Bruno learned a trick!" Emma proudly announced. She pointed a tiny finger at the huge dog. "Bruno, sit like a prince!"

Bruno immediately sat upright, chest puffed out, resting his head at an absurdly proud angle.

Alessandro couldn't stop the quiet laugh that escaped his chest. It was a genuine sound—one he hadn't made in years. Standing nearby, trimming the rosebushes, Sophia paused and looked over. Seeing Alessandro laugh, bathed in the soft afternoon light with her daughter, made her heart skip an unexpected beat.

Later that night, after Emma was fast asleep, Sophia brought fresh linens to Alessandro’s private study. She found him sitting behind his heavy oak desk, staring at an old, framed photograph of a young boy.

"He had your eyes," Sophia said gently, placing the linens on a nearby chair.

Alessandro looked up, his expression unreadable for a moment before softening. "My brother, Julian. He passed when he was ten. A rivalry... a mistake in my family's past that I was too young to stop." He set the frame down carefully. "After that, I promised myself I would never allow weakness into my life again. I built these walls high so nothing could slip through."

Sophia stepped closer, her voice filled with quiet empathy. "Protecting your heart isn't the same as staying alive, Alessandro. Loving someone isn't a weakness. It's the only thing that gives all of this any real meaning."

Alessandro looked at her, struck by her words. The distance between them suddenly felt fragile, magnetic, and completely dangerous.
