Chapter 2 - THE REFUSAL

Sophia’s legs felt like lead, but maternal instinct overpowered her fear. She rushed forward into the courtyard, her face pale with terror, reaching out toward her daughter.
"Emma!" Sophia cried out, her voice cracked with panic.
Before she could take another three steps, Alessandro moved with liquid speed. He raised a black-gloved hand and stepped directly between Sophia and the toddler, his towering frame blocking her path with absolute, authoritative command.
"Don't move," Alessandro said, his tone low and dangerously steady. "If you run, you risk startling him."
Sophia stopped, her breath coming in ragged white plumes in the crisp air. She stared at the back of the man whose name brought fear to the entire city.
Alessandro turned his attention back to his dog. Bruno was a trained weapon, loyal to Alessandro alone. He had been bred for protection, discipline, and absolute obedience. Alessandro took a slow, measured step forward, his voice cutting through the silent, snow-filled air like a razor.
"Bruno. Come," Alessandro commanded, quiet yet commanding.
It was the tone that had made grown men yield. The guards held their breath, expecting the massive dog to instantly heel at his master’s side.
Bruno slowly opened one piercing yellow eye. He looked at Alessandro. He blinked once, completely unbothered.
Then, to the complete shock of everyone present, the legendary war dog ignored the command entirely. Bruno lazily lowered his massive, wet head and rested it comfortably right into three-year-old Emma’s small lap.

Emma gave a soft giggle and patted the dog’s forehead with her tiny palm.
Alessandro’s eyes widened slightly. For the first time in his life, his absolute authority had been completely dismissed—by his own dog, for a child who barely reached his knee.
