Chapter 4 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The incident in the courtyard marked a shift that no one in the Moretti household could have predicted. Instead of firing Sophia or sending the dog away, Alessandro ordered that Sophia and Emma be moved from the staff quarters to the main wing of the manor.
To the rest of the staff, it was baffling. To Alessandro’s inner circle, it was concerning.
Alessandro spent his days managing a vast business empire that spanned shipping, real estate, and private security. His life was defined by control, discipline, and caution. He had spent years closing off his heart after the tragic loss of his younger brother years ago—a loss he blamed himself for, feeling he hadn't been vigilant enough to protect his family.
Since then, no one was allowed close. No softness was permitted inside his walls.
Yet every evening, as Alessandro walked through the grand corridors of his house, he found himself pausing near the sitting room. There, by the fireplace, Bruno—a dog that used to require a leather muzzle around strangers—lay sprawled out on the rug while Emma read him picture books.
Sophia remained wary. She kept her distance from Alessandro, working tirelessly during her shifts and keeping Emma close during off-hours. She knew men like Alessandro were dangerous, not just because of their power, but because of the world they inhabited.
One evening, as rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows, Alessandro entered the library to find Sophia dusting the high shelves.
"You don't need to work this late, Sophia," he said, his deep voice startling her.
She pulled her hand back, turning to face him. "It's my job, Mr. Moretti. You pay me generously. I earn my keep."
"You speak to me differently than the others," Alessandro observed, stepping into the warm glow of the fireplace. "They tell me what they think I want to hear. You look at me as if you're waiting for me to make a mistake."
"I look at you as a mother guarding her child," Sophia answered honestly. "I don't care about your wealth or your name. I only care about keeping Emma safe."

Alessandro looked at her, noting the quiet strength in her posture. "Your daughter is safer in this house than anywhere else in the world, Sophia. I give you my word."
For the first time, looking into his steady eyes, Sophia felt a small part of her defenses begin to thaw.
