Chapter 1 - THE TOWER OF IRON AND FROST

The courtyard of the Moretti estate was built to intimidate. High stone walls, centuries old and dusted with fresh winter snow, rose like the ramparts of a fortress. It was a place where ordinary men spoke in hushed whispers and where no one made a mistake twice.

Sophia Carter adjusted the collar of her faded housekeeper’s dress, her hands trembling slightly—not from the bitter cold, but from sheer terror. She had taken this job at the sprawling upstate New York compound out of utter desperation. As a single mother trying to support her three-year-old daughter, Emma, options were scarce. But she knew the rumors.

Alessandro Moretti was not just a wealthy tycoon; he was the head of an empire forged in power, influence, and unwavering authority. Men twice his size bowed their heads in his presence. His word was law, and his domain was absolute.

And then there was Bruno.

Bruno was Alessandro’s legendary Cane Corso—a massive, ninety-pound beast with dark fur, a chest like an anvil, and a temperament so dangerous that even trained dog handlers approached his enclosure in pair. Earlier that afternoon, a handler had made a mistake during the dog's bath, causing the giant animal to break his tether in a panic. The entire courtyard was in chaos.

Sophia sprinted around the corner into the stone courtyard, her heart hammering against her ribs. What she saw made the blood run completely cold in her veins.

A terrified handler was clutching a torn sleeve near the gate, while two armed security guards stood utterly frozen, their hands hovering near their holstered weapons but too afraid to act. In the center of the wet, snow-dusted stone pavement sat Bruno, dripping with water.

And right beside the beast was Emma.

Three-year-old Emma, wearing mismatched winter boots and a tiny pink coat, was kneeling calmly on the freezing stone. In her little hands, she held a damp washcloth and a plastic yellow cup. She was reaching toward the colossal dog’s massive head.

Before Sophia could scream, heavy footsteps echoed under the grand stone archway.

Alessandro Moretti stepped out into the courtyard. His dark tailored overcoat cut a sharp silhouette against the white snow. His sharp, sculpted jaw was tight, his dark eyes sweeping over the scene. His face, usually an unreadable mask of iron, froze in utter astonishment.

Emma tilted her head, gently wiping water from Bruno's snout, and looked up at the fearsome creature.

"You can smell," Emma said sweetly.
