Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the Carlisle name was a distant memory. Evelyn had officially changed her and Lily’s last names back to her maiden name, Vance.
Evelyn retired from field deployments, taking over as the Chief Executive Director of Blackwood Tactical’s global security operations. Her new position allowed her to work directly from the city headquarters, ensuring she would never have to be away from Lily again.
They moved out of the safe house and into a stunning craftsman-style home located on a peaceful coastal bluff. The house featured large glass windows, warm wooden beams, and a wide wooden deck overlooking the ocean.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sun glistened brightly over the water.
Marcus and Sarah came over for a backyard barbecue, bringing fresh seafood and gifts for Lily. The lawn was filled with music, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of grilled steak.
Lily ran up to Evelyn, holding a brightly colored seashell she had found on the beach path below the house.
“Look, Mommy!” Lily cheered, holding the shell up to the sunlight. “It shines like gold!”
Evelyn knelt down, taking the shell gently in her hands. “It’s beautiful, Lily. Just like you.”

Lily hugged her mother tightly around the neck, pressing her soft cheek against Evelyn’s. “I love our new house, Mommy. Nobody is ever mean to us here.”
Evelyn closed her eyes, holding her daughter close, feeling the deep, unshakeable peace that now filled their lives. “Nobody will ever be mean to you again, baby. Mommy promises.”
