Chapter 8 - The Clearing Storm

A month after the court hearing, spring arrived in the hills overlooking the bay. Blue skies stretched over the pine forests, and the air smelled of blooming wildflowers and fresh rain.
At the Blackwood safe house, the garden was filled with sunshine.
Lily ran across the green lawn, wearing a bright purple sundress and yellow sneakers, laughing joyfully as she chased a small golden retriever puppy that Evelyn had adopted for her. Her face was bright, her laughter ringing out clear and free of any lingering fear.
Evelyn sat on the stone patio, holding a warm cup of coffee. Beside her sat Sarah Chen, reviewing the final divorce decree and custody settlement.
“Grant signed the final papers from his holding cell this morning,” Sarah said, sliding a pen over to Evelyn. “He surrendered all parental rights, forfeited his claim to the house, and agreed to full financial restitution for the stolen trust funds.”
Evelyn signed her name on the dotted line with a smooth, steady hand. “And Vanessa?”
“Pled guilty to felony child endangerment to avoid a longer sentence,” Sarah replied with a satisfied smile. “She’s serving two years at the state correctional facility. Her luxury boutique went bankrupt last week.”
Evelyn set the pen down, looking out at her daughter running through the grass. The long, bloody battle was finally over. The shadows that had threatened to destroy her family’s future had been swept away completely.

“How is Lily doing?” Sarah asked softly, looking at the laughing child.
“She sleeps through the night now,” Evelyn said, a genuine, warm smile touching her lips. “No nightmares. No fear.”
