Chapter 3 - The Cold Retreat

Ten minutes later, Evelyn walked down the stairs. She held Lily on her hip, while her free hand carried a heavy black tactical duffel packed with Lily’s clothes, medical documents, and favorite plush toys.

Vanessa sat back down on the white sofa, sipping her champagne with a smirk, while Grant paced nervously near the foyer.

“You’re making a huge mistake, Evelyn,” Grant warned, his hands shoved deep into his trousers pockets. “I have the best family lawyers in the state on retainer. If you walk out that door with Lily, I will file for sole custody before sunrise and hit you with an emergency restraining order!”

Evelyn walked straight past him toward the front door. She set her duffel down for a second, unlatching the lock with one hand while keeping Lily protected in her left arm.

“Call them,” Evelyn said smoothly. “Call every lawyer in the city. Tell them to ask for the security footage from the living room camera hidden inside the smoke detector.”

Grant’s face drained of all color. “The… the smoke detector?”

“Did you really think an elite security director wouldn't outfit her home with hidden 4K internal feeds?” Evelyn asked, her lips curving into a cold, lethal smile. “I have high-definition audio and video of Vanessa pressing her heel on Lily’s hand while you stood by and comforted her. I’ve already backed it up to three off-site cloud servers.”

Vanessa dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the marble floor, sparkling wine splashing across her red heels.

“Grant!” Vanessa shrieked, panic breaking through her smug facade. “Delete those files! Tell her to delete them!”

“She can’t, Vanessa,” Grant whispered, his voice trembling as he stared at his wife. “She doesn't control the off-site servers from her phone.”

Evelyn picked up her duffel bag and stepped out into the crisp, cool afternoon air. A black armored SUV pulled up to the driveway curb, its driver sliding out to open the rear door.

“Evelyn, please!” Grant shouted, running out onto the porch. “We can talk about this! Don't ruin everything we built over a misunderstanding!”

Evelyn strapped Lily securely into her car seat in the back. Before closing the door, she looked back at Grant standing on the porch in his expensive suit, looking small and weak against the backdrop of the massive house.

“There is no misunderstanding, Grant,” Evelyn said quietly. “You traded your family for a snake. Now you get to live with the venom.”

She slammed the door shut, and the SUV glided silently down the driveway into the foggy afternoon.
