Chapter 2 - The Severed Cord

The quiet in the living room was heavier than the ocean. Grant took an instinctive step toward Evelyn, his hand reaching out, but the look in her dark eyes stopped him like a physical wall.
“Evelyn, wait,” Grant stammered, his polished executive aura cracking at the edges. “It’s not what it looks like. Vanessa was just staying here because… because her apartment had a plumbing emergency.”
Evelyn didn't blink. She held Lily securely, feeling her daughter’s rapid heartbeats against her ribs. “She was wearing your robe, Grant. She was sitting on our couch, drinking champagne, and pressing her shoe into our five-year-old’s hand.”
“I was teaching her respect!” Vanessa chimed in from behind Grant, her voice laced with artificial innocence. “She spilled juice on the white rug, Grant! I just told her to clean it!”
“Shut your mouth, Vanessa,” Evelyn said, her voice devoid of emotion, yet so razor-sharp that Vanessa involuntarily took a half-step back behind Grant’s shoulder.
Grant cleared his throat, trying to regain control. “Evelyn, you’ve been deployed for nine months. You can’t just walk in here, create a scene, and act like you own the moral high ground. We had an arrangement about house rules.”
“Our arrangement was that you would raise our daughter with love while I led international tactical operations to secure her trust fund,” Evelyn replied. Her tone was terrifyingly calm—the voice of an operative who had navigated war zones without losing her nerve. “That arrangement is officially terminated.”
Evelyn turned on her heel, carrying Lily toward the grand staircase.
“Where are you going?!” Grant called out, his voice rising in anger and panic. “This is my house! You can’t just walk out with my daughter!”
Evelyn paused on the third step, looking down at him over her shoulder. Her face was shadowed by the overhead chandelier, making her look like an untouchable stranger.

“This house was bought with my signing bonus from Blackwood Tactical,” Evelyn said. “And Lily is leaving with me. If you try to step on these stairs to stop me, Grant, I will treat you like an enemy combatant.”
Grant froze, his hand hovering over the mahogany banister. He knew Evelyn’s background. He knew what she was capable of when threatened. He stood paralyzed as the heavy thud of her combat boots echoed up the stairs.
