Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Shield

The sun began to set over the Pacific Ocean, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, magenta, and amber. Ocean waves crashed rhythmically against the cliffs below, sending cool sea mist into the evening air.

Evelyn stood at the edge of the wooden deck, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the golden light reflect off the water’s surface.

Lily sat at the outdoor table nearby, drawing pictures of her new puppy with colorful markers, surrounded by people who loved and protected her.

Marcus walked up to the railing, standing beside Evelyn, looking out at the horizon.

“It’s a good view,” Marcus noted softly.

“The best view in the world,” Evelyn agreed, her voice rich with contentment.

“Grant’s trial concluded yesterday,” Marcus mentioned quietly. “He received five years for grand larceny and corporate fraud. He tried to appeal for early parole, but the judge denied it instantly.”

Evelyn looked down at her glass, then back out at the endless ocean. The news didn't evoke anger or malice in her heart anymore—only a quiet, final sense of closure. Grant had made his choice on that cold marble floor, and life had delivered his answer.

“He’s a ghost, Marcus,” Evelyn said softly. “He doesn't exist in our world anymore.”

Lily ran over, grabbing Evelyn’s hand and tugging her toward the lawn. “Mommy! Come look at the puppy! He’s learning how to sit!”

Evelyn laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that resonated across the quiet bluff. She set her glass down, took her daughter’s small hand in hers, and walked down the steps into the warm twilight.

The road behind them had been carved through ice and fire, but standing here in the golden light, Evelyn knew they had reached a place where no storm could ever touch them again.
