Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House

Grant froze, his mouth staying slightly open. His lead attorney closed his eyes and let out a long, silent breath of defeat.
“Your Honor—” Grant stuttered, his confidence evaporating instantly. “That video… it was taken out of context!”
“Out of context?!” Judge Vance’s voice echoed like thunder off the oak paneling. “I watched a five-year-old girl weep on a marble floor while a grown woman pressed her high heel into the child’s skin! And I watched you, Mr. Carlisle, walk into the room and ask the perpetrator if she was okay!”
Vanessa grabbed her purse, looking ready to sprint out of the courtroom, but two armed sheriff’s deputies stepped up to block the rear exits.
“Your Honor,” Sarah Chen spoke up, standing at the defense table. “We request an immediate emergency protective order against both Grant Carlisle and Vanessa Miller, full temporary legal and physical custody granted to Evelyn Vance-Carlisle, and an immediate freeze on all joint marital assets pending a full forensic audit.”
“Granted in full,” Judge Vance ruled without a second of hesitation, slamming her wooden gavel down. “Furthermore, I am referring the video evidence directly to the District Attorney’s office for immediate criminal charges of child endangerment and felony assault against Ms. Vanessa Miller.”
Vanessa shrieked as a female deputy stepped forward, pulling her hands behind her back to snap steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
“Grant! Help me! Do something!” Vanessa screamed, thrashing as she was led toward the side processing door.
Grant took a step toward her, but Judge Vance pointed a stern finger directly at his face. “Step back, Mr. Carlisle! If you take one more step, I will hold you in contempt and have you sitting in a cell right beside her!”

Grant collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his total ruin crashed down upon him.
Evelyn stood up smoothly, picking up her briefcase. She didn't spare Grant a second look as she walked out of the courtroom, her heavy heels clicking with steady, deliberate rhythm against the marble floor.
