Chapter 7 - The Domino Effect

Over the next forty-eight hours, Grant Carlisle’s world collapsed like a house of cards in a hurricane.

The news of the criminal charges against Vanessa Miller spilled onto the front pages of the financial journals. Carlisle Financial’s stock plummeted by forty percent in a single morning as major institutional investors pulled their capital out of the firm.

In his corner office on the top floor of the Carlisle Financial Tower, Grant sat surrounded by stacks of legal notices, termination demands, and frozen bank account alerts. His phone rang continuously, but he didn't have the courage to pick it up.

The double doors opened, and Marcus walked into the office, accompanied by two federal auditors and a representative from the Board of Directors.

“What is this?” Grant demanded, his eyes bloodshot, his suit rumpled and unkempt. “You can’t just walk into my office!”

“The Board of Directors held an emergency meeting an hour ago, Grant,” the board representative stated coldly, placing a signed document on his desk. “You have been officially terminated as CEO of Carlisle Financial for gross moral misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty.”

Grant stared at the document in shock. “Terminated?! I founded this company!”

“And you destroyed it in two days,” Marcus said calmly, stepping forward. “Furthermore, Mrs. Carlisle’s forensic team discovered that you embezzled two million dollars from her personal security trust to finance Vanessa Miller’s luxury boutique in the city.”

Grant’s hands began to shake violently. “It was an investment! I was going to pay it back!”

“That’s grand larceny, Grant,” Marcus said, pulling a pair of federal arrest warrants from his coat pocket. “The authorities are waiting downstairs in the lobby.”

Grant looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows of his corner office, looking at the city he had once dominated. He had sacrificed his wife, his daughter, and his integrity for a superficial fantasy, and now he had nothing left but an empty room and a prison sentence.
