Chapter 4 - Safe Harbor

The SUV navigated through the city streets, eventually pulling through the heavy steel gates of a private, high-security residential complex in the northern hills. The property belonged to Blackwood Tactical—a safe house reserved exclusively for senior directors and high-ranking operatives.
The vehicle stopped outside a warm, wood-accented cottage surrounded by tall pine trees and reinforced perimeter walls.
Evelyn carried Lily inside, where the scent of cedar and fresh tea filled the air. Standing near the kitchen counter was Marcus, a veteran operative with graying hair and a calm, protective demeanor.
“Is the perimeter clear, Marcus?” Evelyn asked, placing Lily gently onto a plush leather armchair.
“Fully locked down,” Marcus replied, handing Evelyn a warm mug. “Thermal sensors active, two guards at the gate, and full cyber-encryption on all local networks. Carlisle’s team couldn't trace this location if they used government satellites.”
Evelyn knelt in front of Lily, taking her daughter’s small hands in hers. The red mark on Lily’s wrist from Vanessa’s heel had faded to a pale pink, but the trauma in her wide brown eyes was still fresh.
“Lily, baby,” Evelyn said softly, her voice completely transforming into a mother’s gentle warmth. “Look at Mommy.”
Lily looked down at her mother, her small bottom lip trembling. “Mommy… am I bad? Vanessa said I was a bad girl because I couldn't clean the rug.”
Evelyn felt a sharp ache in her heart, but her voice remained rock-solid. “You are the best girl in the world, Lily. You did nothing wrong. Vanessa is a mean person, and she will never, ever come near you again. Do you hear me?”
Lily nodded slowly, leaning forward to bury her head against Evelyn’s neck. “I want to stay with you, Mommy. Don't go back to the big house.”
“We’re never going back,” Evelyn swore softly, stroking her daughter’s soft hair. “This is our home now.”

Marcus tapped his tablet screen and stepped over to Evelyn. “Evelyn, Grant just filed an emergency motion in family court. He’s claiming child abduction and demanding an immediate return order.”
Evelyn stood up, her gentleness folding back into a cold, tactical edge. “Send the cloud link of the living room incident directly to the presiding judge’s clerk. Let’s see how fast his motion gets thrown out.”
