Chapter 9 - The Challenge Accepted

The room fell completely silent. Even the camera shutters stopped clicking.

Daniel Vance blinked, clearly not expecting Ethan to counter with such boldness. "What are you talking about, Ashford?"

"The annual Exhibition Gala is tonight in this very ballroom," Ethan said, projecting his voice with unshakable authority. "All of the judges are already in the city. The media is here. If Claire is physically incapable of dancing at an elite level, you have nothing to fear. We will dance an open-floor Argentine Tango against you and your partner, right here, tonight. In front of the press."

Daniel laughed dismissively, though a slight twitch near his eye betrayed his nerves. "An exhibition match? That is completely unorthodox."

"Are you afraid, Daniel?" I finally spoke, stepping directly up to the microphone.

My voice was calm, clear, and resonant. It echoed through the grand Drake ballroom, capturing every ear.

"For twelve years, you've told the world that I was fragile," I said, looking straight into Daniel's pale eyes. "You told sponsors that I couldn't survive the pressure. You built an empire on my silence. If my leg is broken, you should be able to defeat me without breaking a sweat. Unless... you've always known that without me, you were never truly a champion."

A collective gasp swept through the room. Several veteran dance journalists in the second row exchanged stunned glances.

Daniel’s face darkened with pure rage. His professional facade cracked, exposing the vicious vanity underneath. "You want to humiliate yourself in front of the entire country, Claire? Fine. Tonight, on this floor. When you collapse, don't expect anyone to carry you off."

He spun on his heel and stormed off the stage, his entourage scrambling after him.

Walter Ashford stood up from his seat, glaring at Ethan with absolute contempt. "You have ruined this family's reputation for the last time, Ethan. When she fails tonight, you are stripped of your title, your shares, and your name."

"Keep the shares, Father," Ethan replied without batting an eye. "I'd rather have my dignity."

Walter turned and marched out, leaving the press in a frenzy.

Back in the green room, my hands were shaking violently. The adrenaline was fading, leaving a bone-deep chill in its wake. Ethan closed the door, shutting out the noise of the hallway, and came to stand directly in front of me.

He reached out and gently took my trembling hands into his warm palms.

"We have six hours," Ethan said softly. "Are you ready for this?"

"The Argentine Tango requires deep knee lunges and sharp, violent pivots, Ethan," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "If my leg gives out on that floor tonight, Daniel wins forever. My mother will hear about it. The world will see it."

Ethan leaned down, his forehead gently resting against mine. "Your leg won't give out."

"How can you be so sure?"

May you like

"Because you're not dancing alone this time," he whispered. "Twelve years ago, Daniel let you carry the weight of that partnership until it broke you. Tonight, I carry you. Just trust me."

Looking into his steady, dark eyes, the fear that had chained me for twelve years slowly began to melt away.
