Chapter 3 - The Cost of Pride

The silence stretched so taut it felt on the verge of snapping.
Then, from the far corner by the kitchen, a single pair of hands began to clap. It was Luis. His applause echoed loudly against the vaulted ceiling, raw and defiant. Within seconds, another waiter joined in. Then a bartender. Then a table of younger investors near the front began to applaud, unable to deny what they had just witnessed.
The room erupted. It wasn't polite society clapping; it was a thunderous ovation reserved for world-class artists.
Vivian turned red, her fingers digging so violently into her designer clutch that the seams strained. "She was off-beat!" Vivian shrieked, though her voice was drowned out by the roar of the crowd. "Her footwork was reckless! Walter, do something!"
Walter Ashford sat frozen. The glass of vintage scotch in his hand trembled, amber liquid splashing against the crystal rim. His arrogant smirk had vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. He had staged this entire spectacle to entertain his peers and put a low-class woman in her place, yet he had accidentally elevated her onto a pedestal before the entire city's elite.
I didn't smile. I didn't bow. I simply walked over to Walter's table, each step measured and calm.
"A bet is a bet, Mr. Ashford," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the fading applause.
Walter stood up, towering over me, his tailored suit straining against his broad shoulders. "You think you've won something here, girl? You work for Ashford Hospitality. I pay your wages. You don't command me."
"I don't need to command you," I replied smoothly, pointing toward the sea of glittering guests. "They saw the wager. Hundreds of their phones are currently livestreaming your words to every corner of social media. The Ashford brand prides itself on 'uncompromising honor and elite integrity,' doesn't it?"
Walter's jaw worked silently. Veins bulged along his neck.
"Father," Ethan intervened, stepping between us. His voice carried a cold authority I hadn't expected from him. "You gave your word in front of the board, our investors, and the press. If you back down now, the Ashford name becomes a joke by tomorrow morning."
"Ethan, shut your mouth!" Walter snarled under his breath.
"You challenged her," Ethan insisted, holding his father's furious gaze without flinching. "Pay the debt."
Murmurs rippled through the room. Walter realized the trap he had laid for me had snapped shut around his own throat. If he refused, his stock would bleed and his reputation as a man of honor would evaporate.
Slowly, Walter turned toward the service staff huddled by the swinging kitchen doors. His face was the color of a bruised plum.
"To the staff of the Ashford Grand Ballroom," Walter choked out, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. He paused, struggling against his own gargantuan ego. "I... apologize for my inappropriate remarks earlier this evening. Your work is valued."
He spat out the last sentence, spun on his heel, and stormed toward the private elevators without waiting for an answer. Vivian, tears of humiliation burning in her eyes, gathered her silk gown and scurried after him.
The staff let out a collective breath. Luis looked at me with wide, shining eyes, as if I had just slain a dragon right in front of him.

I turned to slip away into the shadows of the service hallway, but a warm, strong hand gently caught my wrist.
"Wait," Ethan said softly. "You can't just walk away after that."
