Chapter 19 - The Garden of Titans

Madison Square Garden was an ocean of light, sound, and adrenaline.
Twenty thousand spectators packed the arena, their cheers echoing like thunder from the rafters. The grand floor had been transformed into an Olympic-standard ballroom stage, flanked by twelve international judges in white tie and tails. Television networks from forty countries were broadcasting live.
Backstage, the tension was thick enough to choke on.
Every major couple from around the globe was warming up in the tunnels. Among them stood Viktor and Elena Rostov—the reigning five-time World Champions from Russia. Viktor stood six-foot-three, towering and imperious, while Elena looked at me with cold, dismissive amusement.
"The maid," Elena sneered in Russian-accented English as she walked past me, adjusting her diamond-encrusted hairpiece. "A cute publicity stunt for the American media. Enjoy your five minutes of fame, little girl. Real dancing requires discipline, not sob stories."
I didn't dignify her with a response. I adjusted the gloves of my gown.
For tonight, Ethan had commissioned a custom masterpiece: a midnight-black silk gown that flowed like liquid obsidian, accented with deep crimson under-layers that looked like living flames whenever I moved. Around my neck, I wore no diamonds—only the simple silver chain Ethan had given me that morning.
"Are you ready?" Ethan asked, stepping up behind me. He looked devastatingly handsome in his tailor-made black tailcoat, his presence radiating an aura of absolute composure.
"My knee is holding," I said, taking a deep breath to steady the rapid pounding in my chest. "Ethan... look at the VIP box."
Ethan followed my gaze toward the private mezzanine box overlooking the arena floor.
Sitting in the front row, looking pale, withered, and isolated, was Walter Ashford. He had come alone. No entourage, no board members. Just a broken billionaire watching the son he had tried to discard.
"Let him watch," Ethan said, not a trace of bitterness in his tone. "He’s about to see what true wealth looks like."
The arena announcer's voice boomed through the massive stadium speakers:
*"Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcoming to the floor for the Master Exhibition Division... representing the United States... Claire Bennett and Ethan Ashford!"*
The arena erupted. The roar was deafening, a wall of sound that shook the very foundations of the building. The story of the humiliated maid who had risen to reclaim her destiny had captured the imagination of the entire world.
Ethan held out his hand.
"Shall we, my champion?" he whispered.

I placed my hand in his. "Lead the way."
