Chapter 30 - The Mask Slips

"No!"

The scream echoed from the upper balcony. Michael Cross lunged toward the brass railing, his face contorted in an ugly, manic rage. "The Council is compromised! She lost! Her choreography was irregular! I demand a re-dance!"

"The Council has spoken, Mr. Cross," the chief patron announced coldly, not even looking up at him. "Your dancer was an automaton. Claire Bennett is a master. Transfer the equity immediately."

"You ruined me!" Julian Vance roared, turning violently on Michael in the box. "You promised me she was broken! You promised me Marcus Ashford would surrender his assets! You took my last ten million for this farce!"

Julian swung a wild fist at Michael. Michael dodged with surprising agility, using his heavy obsidian cane to smash Julian across the temple, sending the disgraced billionaire crashing into the velvet chairs, bleeding and unconscious.

"If I go down, you all burn with me!" Michael screamed, pulling a black electronic detonator from his breast pocket. "The floor is rigged! Nobody leaves this room until my Swiss accounts are credited!"

Panic erupted across the subterranean ballroom. The masked elites shrieked, trampling over velvet ropes as they scrambled for the reinforced exits.

"Claire, get behind me!" Ethan shouted, stepping between me and the balcony above.

"You took everything from me, Claire!" Michael shrieked from above, his thumb hovering over the red button. "You were always the star! They never looked at me! I was the man who lifted you, and you got all the glory! You deserved that ditch on Highway 41!"

*CRASH.*

The glass skylights high above the ballroom shattered into a million glittering pieces.

Dozens of tactical flashbangs detonated in the air with blinding white flashes and ear-splitting booms.

"Federal agents! Nobody move! Drop the weapon!"

Heavily armed FBI SWAT teams rappelled down black ropes through the shattered roof, their laser sights painting Michael’s chest in dozens of crimson dots. Marcus Ashford had delivered on his promise. The Department of Justice had surrounded the compound.

Michael froze, his hand shaking violently as the laser sights converged on his forehead. The arrogance, the megalomania, the ghost of twelve years—all of it vanished, leaving behind only a pitiful, terrified coward cornered in his own web of lies.

"Drop the detonator, Cross," the lead agent commanded through a bullhorn.

Michael’s knees gave out. The obsidian cane clattered to the floor, followed by the electronic device. Two tactical officers tackled him to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged Michael toward the service stairs, his eyes caught mine across the smoky, ruined ballroom.

There was no hate left in my heart for him. Only pity.

"You were wrong, Michael," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the settling dust. "A great dancer doesn't shine because of the light on the floor. She shines because the fire inside her refuses to die."

Ethan wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me securely against his side as federal agents secured the perimeter, bagging Julian Vance and the illegal syndicate servers as evidence.

"It's over, my queen," Ethan whispered, kissing my temple. "You have your life back."
