Chapter 12 - The Man in the Shadows

I turned my head—and the breath was ripped entirely from my lungs.

The man bolting toward the service exit wasn't a stranger. He wasn't some shadowy hired gun in a trench coat. He was dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, wearing cuff links bearing the crest of the International Dance Federation.

It was Julian Vance. Daniel’s father. The honorary chairman of the Grand Prix Committee, and the man who had personally handed me my first junior gold medal when I was sixteen years old.

"Julian!" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking with utter disbelief. "Dad, what are you doing?!"

Two federal marshals intercepted Julian before his hand could hit the emergency push-bar. They slammed him against the steel kitchen doors, the sickening echo of bone hitting metal ringing out across the grand ballroom. Cameras from dozens of high-society reporters flashed relentlessly, capturing the billionaire power broker being forced onto his knees on the polished marble.

"Let go of me!" Julian snarled, his silver hair disheveled, his face flushed with crimson fury. "You have no jurisdiction here! Walter, tell these animals who I am!"

Walter Ashford did not move an inch. The patriarch of the Ashford dynasty stood frozen, his champagne glass trembling violently in his liver-spotted hand. For the first time since I had walked into his mansion holding a feather duster and a bucket of bleach, Walter Ashford looked genuinely terrified.

"Mr. Vance," Detective Rossi said, walking slowly toward the pinned man, her low heels clicking rhythmically like a death march. "We have the Swiss wire transfers. We have the decrypted communications between your private offshore account and the mechanic who severed the brake lines on Claire Bennett’s sedan in 2012. And an hour ago, that same mechanic signed an immunity deal in Chicago. He gave us your voice recordings."

A collective gasp swept through the hundreds of elite guests. High society women clutched their pearls; venture capitalists and judges exchanged horrified glances.

I felt Ethan’s arm slide around my waist. His touch was solid, grounded, keeping me from collapsing as twelve years of suffocating darkness suddenly cracked wide open.

"Why?" The word tore from my throat before I could stop it. It wasn't loud, but in the dead silence of the room, it carried to every corner. I stepped down from the podium, ignoring the dull throb in my scarred knee. "Why did you do it, Julian? I trusted you. You were my mentor."

Julian slowly lifted his head. The panic on his face curdled into pure, venomous malice. He sneered, looking at me with eyes that held no remorse—only the burning disgust of an aristocrat defied.

"Because you were too good, you worthless little charity case," Julian spat, saliva flying from his lips. "You weren't born into this world! You had no bloodline, no pedigree, no backing! And yet, every time my son stepped onto that floor, the judges couldn't take their eyes off you. You were going to take the World Championship. You were going to make Daniel look like second best! I spent twenty million dollars building Daniel’s dynasty, and you were about to destroy it in one single routine!"

Daniel Vance staggered backward, clutching his chest as if struck by a physical blow. "Dad... no... you told me she fled because she couldn't handle the pressure. You told me she quit!"

"She wouldn't take the bribe!" Julian roared at his son. "I offered her two million to throw the semi-finals and she laughed in my face! She had to be removed. If she couldn't dance, she couldn't take what belonged to you!"

Ethan stepped forward then, his jaw locked in cold, lethal rage. The gentle heir who had offered me his hand to defy his father had vanished; in his place stood a protector ready to tear the world apart.

"Get him out of here," Ethan told the marshals, his voice dropping an octave into absolute authority. "Take him before I forget there are cameras watching."

As the agents hauled Julian Vance away in handcuffs, the silence in the room was suffocating. I stood beneath the crystal chandeliers, the maid who had been offered as a cruel joke, while the man who stole my life was dragged into the dark.
