Chapter 28 - The Arena of Shadows

The venue for the Black Rose Gala was hidden four stories beneath an abandoned industrial warehouse on the Hudson River.
Behind reinforced steel doors and armed security carrying submachine guns lay a clandestine ballroom that rivaled the opulence of the Paris Opera House. Heavy black velvet drapes lined the walls, and the polished ebony hardwood floor gleamed like a pool of fresh obsidian under the glow of blood-red chandeliers.
The audience consisted of two hundred of the world's most dangerous and powerful elites—oligarchs, cartel financiers, corrupt politicians, and disgraced aristocrats. They wore ornate Venetian masks, sipping vintage champagne while placing hundred-thousand-dollar digital wagers on illuminated tablets embedded into their VIP tables.
In the elevated VIP box, Michael Cross sat in a throne-like velvet chair, his obsidian cane resting between his legs. Beside him, dressed in an immaculate white tuxedo, was Julian Vance—out on astronomical bail, his face drawn and sneering, desperate for a taste of retribution.
"They won't show," Julian muttered nervously, twitching. "Ashford isn't stupid enough to bring her into the lion's den."
"She'll come," Michael said with supreme confidence. "Claire Bennett’s pride is her greatest flaw. It’s what allowed me to manipulate her twelve years ago, and it’s what will destroy her tonight."
At the far end of the ballroom, the double brass doors swung open.
A hushed murmur rippled through the masked crowd.
I stepped onto the perimeter of the ebony floor. I wore a backless, midnight-crimson gown woven from silk and thousands of microscopic Swarovski crystals that caught the red light like burning embers. My spine was straight, my head held high, the scars on my back glistening openly without shame.
Beside me walked Ethan Ashford, clad in a sharp, tailored black tuxedo, radiating the calm, lethal menace of a predator entering his own territory.
Across the floor stood Valerie Vance. She was stunning, wrapped in an icy silver gown, her expression completely detached from humanity, like a finely tuned weapon waiting for a signal.
The master of ceremonies, an imposing man with a golden mask, stepped to the center microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen. The wager is set at fifty million dollars in private equity and lifetime rights," the announcer declared, his voice echoing through the vaulted chamber. "No judges. No scorecards. The winner is determined solely by the consensus of the Black Rose Council upon conclusion of the Tango and the Paso Doble. Dancers... take your marks."
Michael looked down from his balcony, his lips parting in a triumphant, venomous smile. He tapped his cane against the brass railing.

"Show her what the modern world looks like, Valerie," Michael commanded.
