Chapter 26 - The Unraveling Thread

The rehearsal space on the top floor of Ethan’s private penthouse in Chicago was a temple of polished glass and mirrors. For five straight days, the mirrors reflected nothing but relentless, furious sweat.

The music pulsed through the high-end sound system—a dark, tempestuous tango with violins that screamed like razor blades cutting through velvet.

Ethan’s hand pressed firmly against the small of my back, guiding my spin with raw, commanding power. Our feet moved in blinding synchronization, inches from colliding, yet tracing lethal geometric perfection across the hardwood. Ethan was not just keeping up; his natural athleticism and intuitive understanding of my movements had transformed him from a capable amateur into a formidable force.

"Again," I panted, wiping sweat from my brow as the track ended.

"Claire, you’ve done that pivot forty times," Ethan said, catching his breath, his silk shirt soaked through, clinging to his broad chest. "Your ankle is swelling."

"Michael’s protege is twenty-two, Ethan. Her joints don't ache from twelve years of scrubbing floors on her knees. If I miss a single step, Michael takes everything."

Ethan caught my waist and pulled me flush against him, stopping my protests with the steady warmth of his chest. "You have something she will never have. You have scars. You have pain that has been forged into art. She’s a machine, Claire. You’re a tempest."

His lips brushed mine, tender yet fiercely possessive. For a moment, the danger, the black-market gala, and the shadows of the past evaporated into the heat of his touch.

The elevator doors chimed, shattering the moment.

Marcus Ashford walked in, accompanied by two tech specialists carrying steel briefcases. Marcus looked haggard, his arrogant posture softened by days of sleepless investigation.

"We cracked Michael’s encrypted accounts," Marcus announced, gesturing for his technicians to set up on the rehearsal table.

Ethan stepped back, his eyes narrowing at his father. "What did you find?"

"Michael didn't act alone twelve years ago, and he isn't acting alone now," Marcus explained, projecting a series of bank transactions and security footage onto the wall mirrors. "His protege isn't just an anonymous dancer. Her name is Valerie Vance. She is Julian Vance's secret illegitimate daughter, raised in secret in Vienna."

I stared at the image on the screen. The girl had cold, amber eyes and high cheekbones, radiating an unnatural, icy discipline.

"Julian’s daughter?" I gasped. "He groomed his own flesh and blood to destroy me?"

"Julian’s fortune is frozen by the feds, but Valerie was bankrolled by an elite criminal syndicate known as the Obsidian Circle," Marcus explained grimly. "They don't want a regular competition. At the Black Rose Gala, the judges are syndicates from five continents. Michael isn't planning on letting you leave that floor alive, Claire. The floorboards are wired for stage pyrotechnics, and the drinks will be spiked with neurotoxins to slow your reflexes."

"Then we strike first," Ethan said, his voice dropping into icy resolve. "We expose their syndicate to the Department of Justice before the music even begins."

"No," I declared, my voice echoing off the mirrors. Both men looked at me in shock. "If we call the feds now, Michael slips away into the European underground again. Julian’s network remains intact. I spent twelve years hiding in the dark, terrified of shadows. I want them in the room. I want them watching. When I beat Valerie on that floor, I will dismantle their entire empire with my own two feet."

Ethan stared at me, his gaze blazing with fierce pride. He walked over, picking up my satin dance shoes.

"Then we give them a performance they’ll never survive," Ethan said.
