Chapter 24 - The Serpent's Bargain

Ethan instantly positioned himself between Michael and me, his hand reaching inside his jacket as security guards in charcoal suits filed quietly into the perimeter of the room.

"One step closer, Cross, and you won't need that cane—you'll need a stretcher," Ethan snarled.

Michael only laughed, a dry, rasping sound that scraped against my nerves. He didn't look like a man cornered by bodyguards; he carried himself with the arrogance of someone holding the detonation switch.

"Relax, little billionaire," Michael sneered, tapping his cane against the hardwood floor. "If your guards lay a finger on me, every financial auditor in North America receives a digital dossier proving Marcus Ashford funneled millions into illegal offshore gambling syndicates. Your precious dynasty collapses before dawn."

Marcus’s jaw tightened. For the first time, I saw a flicker of genuine apprehension in the patriarch's eyes. The monster had been outplayed by the demon he raised.

"What do you want, Michael?" I demanded, stepping out from behind Ethan’s shoulder. I met Michael’s cold, dead eyes head-on. The boy I once spun across polished parquet floors was gone, replaced by a greedy shell.

"What I’ve always wanted, Claire. The spotlight. The money. The crown," Michael said, pacing with a limp toward the fireplace. "Julian Vance is disgraced, but his international patrons—the high-rollers of the European and Asian underground circuits—are still looking for a show. They don't believe you’re truly back. They think tonight was an amateur fluke."

"You're pathetic," I hissed. "You sold my life for two million dollars, and now you want an encore?"

"I want the ultimate exhibition," Michael corrected, his eyes glinting with madness. "Next Friday. The Black Rose Gala in New York. A private, closed-door showcase where the wealthiest patrons on Earth place wagers. My new protege—a twenty-two-year-old phenom I trained myself—against you. If you win, I sign a full legal confession exonerating you, handing over the original tapes of Julian Vance's father ordering the hit, and I disappear forever."

"And if she loses?" Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping into deadly calm.

"If she loses, Claire signs over her lifetime intellectual property, her choreographic licensing, and her exclusive international coaching rights to my new academy. She becomes my brand's property," Michael smiled wickedly. "And Marcus transfers forty percent of the Ashford maritime portfolio to my Swiss account."

"Get out," Ethan spat. "We aren't dancing for your degenerate circus."

"Wait," I called out.

Ethan turned to me, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Claire, no. This is a trap. He wants to destroy you on an underground stage where there are no rules."

"He already tried to destroy me on a highway twelve years ago, and I survived," I said, walking directly up to Michael until I was standing only inches from his face. The scent of expensive cologne couldn't mask the rot of his soul. "I won't spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, wondering when your ghost will jump out of the shadows. I accept your challenge, Michael."

Michael’s grin broadened into a sickening sneer. "Brave girl. Same old Claire. But remember... this isn't the sanitized arena in Chicago. At the Black Rose, the hardwood is stained with the tears of those who thought they were untouchable."

He turned on his heel, limping toward the door. Just before crossing the threshold, he paused, glancing back at Ethan.

"Oh, and Ethan? You might want to ask your dear father about the third passenger in the car that night. You might not like the answer."
