Chapter 10 - The Heat of the Lion

That evening, the Russo estate was bathed in twilight. A cool breeze swept across the mountain terrace, rustling the pines that surrounded the fortress.

Inside the private library on the third floor, a crackling fireplace cast dancing amber shadows across floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with rare first editions, ancient maps, and classical art.

Khloe stood by the hearth, watching the flames lick the dry birch logs. The adrenaline that had carried her through the afternoon in her office had faded, leaving behind an intoxicating mixture of exhaustion and acute awareness. She wasn't running anymore. The predator had become the hunted, and the nightmare was dead.

The soft sound of footsteps made her turn.

Victor entered, carrying two crystal tumblers with an amber pour of scotch. He wore a charcoal silk shirt unbuttoned at the collar. The cold, ruthless titan who had crushed Liam Vance into dust earlier that afternoon had vanished; in his place was a man whose gaze held a smoldering, magnetic heat that made Khloe’s breath catch in her chest.

"A toast," Victor said, offering her a glass. "To the undisputed owner of Khloe Morgan Architecture."

Khloe accepted the glass, her fingers brushing his. A jolt of electric tension shot up her arm, sharp and vivid. "You bought his entire family's assets in less than three hours. How is that even possible?"

"Money is merely paper, Khloe," Victor said, taking a slow sip. "Power is knowing whose hands are on the levers. The Vances built their empire on stolen reputations and false credit. Blowing over their house of cards required very little effort."

"And what about you?" Khloe stepped closer, looking straight into his dark, mesmerizing eyes. "What did this cost you?"

"Nothing I wasn't willing to spend ten times over."

"Why?" Khloe’s voice dropped to a soft, vulnerable whisper. "You don't do charity, Victor. The whole world knows the name Russo means business, blood, and control. Why me? Why did you stand up in that restaurant?"

Victor set his glass down on the marble mantelpiece. He didn't look away. Instead, he stepped into her personal space, his imposing presence enveloping her senses.

"Because the moment I saw you walk into that dining room six months ago at the charity benefit, I saw someone who created beauty in a city built on decay," Victor murmured, his hand slowly rising to cup the side of her jaw. His thumb brushed over her cheekbone, tender, reverent, and full of raw, suppressed hunger. "And when I saw that pathetic excuse for a man dare to grab your wrist, dare to diminish the light you carry... I knew I was done watching from the shadows."

Khloe’s heart raced against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Victor..."

"I warned you at the gates," he whispered, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch above hers, his breath warm and intoxicating against her skin. "I told you that once you stepped inside my world, there were no half-measures. I am not a hero, Khloe. I am a possessive, selfish man. And if you let me kiss you right now, I will never let you go."

Khloe looked into the eyes of the beast who had shielded her from the dark. She saw no cage here—only a devotion so fierce, so absolute, that it set her soul ablaze.

She didn't pull back. Instead, she rose onto her tiptoes, looped her slender arms around his neck, and pressed her lips firmly against his.

May you like

Victor groaned, a low, guttural sound of triumph, as his powerful arms locked around her waist, lifting her against his chest and pulling her into a kiss that consumed everything in its path.
