Chapter 9 - Retribution by Design

At 2:00 PM, the executive offices of Khloe Morgan Architecture in downtown Manhattan were dead silent.
Liam Vance slammed the door of Khloe’s corner office shut, sweating through his five-thousand-dollar bespoke suit. His tie was loose, his hair disheveled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He had spent the last fourteen hours calling every contact in his phone, only to find his lines blocked, his bank cards frozen, and his luxury apartment watched by unmarked black SUVs.
"Where are the backup drives, damn it!" Liam cursed, violently ripping open Khloe’s desk drawers and tossing files across the hardwood floor. "Where did she hide the biometric keys?"
"Looking for these, Vance?"
Liam froze. The blood drained from his face so fast he nearly lost his footing.
Slowly, Liam turned around.
Sitting in Khloe’s ergonomic leather chair behind the desk was Victor Russo. Beside him stood Marco, holding a titanium flash drive between his fingers. Spread out on the glass desktop was a pristine contract with the city council, already bearing the state governor's counter-seal.
"R-Russo..." Liam stuttered, his voice cracking like dry wood. He instinctively backed away until his spine hit the mahogany bookcase. "This is private property. You can't be in here! I’m calling the police!"
Victor didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't even raise his voice. He simply steepled his fingers, leaning back with effortless majesty.
"Call them," Victor said smoothly. "Commissioner Bradley is currently enjoying a private lunch with my chief counsel. But if you prefer, I can connect you directly to Don Valenti."
Liam gasped, clutching his chest. "How... how do you know about Valenti?"
"I know that you owe fifteen million," Victor replied, standing up slowly. Every inch of his towering six-foot-three frame radiated sheer, crushing authority. He walked around the desk, each heavy step echoing like a death knell in the quiet office. "I also know that at ten o'clock this morning, Russo Enterprises acquired all of Valenti's outstanding debt portfolios. In short, Liam... you don't owe the docks anymore. You owe me."
Liam’s knees buckled. He slid down the front of the bookcase, landing hard on the carpet. "Please... Victor, please. Khloe and I were together for three years! It was a domestic dispute! She’s exaggerating, she’s crazy—"
Before Liam could finish the lie, Victor closed the distance. His polished Italian leather shoe planted itself firmly on Liam’s right wrist, pinning it to the floor.
Victor applied just enough pressure to make the small bones in Liam’s wrist groan under the strain.
Liam shrieked in agony, tears immediately springing to his eyes. "Ahhh! Stop! God, please, stop!"
"You bruised her wrist with this hand," Victor said, his voice dropping into a chilling, subterranean register. "You thought because she was gentle, because she possessed grace and talent that you could never match, that she was weak. You thought no one was watching."
Victor bent down, his face inches from Liam’s terrified, tear-streaked face.
"I bought your debt, Liam. I bought your father’s logistics firm twenty minutes ago. I purchased your penthouse mortgage from the bank. By midnight tonight, your family will not have a single dollar left to their name. You will be stripped of your social standing, your country club memberships, and your freedom. If you ever speak her name, look in her direction, or enter the same zip code she walks in, I won't crush your wrist. I will feed you to the currents beneath the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge."
Victor stepped back. Liam lay curled on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably, clutching his bruised arm to his chest, utterly broken and stripped of every illusion of power he had ever clung to.
The door to the private conference room clicked open.
Khloe stepped out. She looked immaculate, wearing a tailored emerald-green blazer, her head held high. She looked down at the man who had terrorized her, manipulated her, and made her doubt her own worth for three long years.
She felt no pity. Only the magnificent, soaring weight of true liberation.
"Get out of my office, Liam," Khloe said softly. "And don't ever look back."
May you like
Liam scrambled to his feet, stumbling over his own shoes as he bolted through the glass doors, fleeing like a beaten cur into the hallway.
