Chapter 2 - The Weight of a Whisper

Victor did not raise his voice. He did not blink. The silence stretched so thin and fragile that the faint hum of the kitchen ventilation sounded like a rising storm.
"Count to three," Victor said softly.
Liam blinked, his smirk faltering as his gaze traveled from Victor’s handmade Italian wool jacket to the dark signet ring on his pinky finger. Still, pride and alcohol made men foolish, and Liam was nothing if not dangerously arrogant. "Excuse me? Buddy, I don't know who the hell you think you are, but you need to turn around and mind your own damn—"
"One."
The word dropped like lead on marble.
Khloe felt the vibration of Victor's tone resonate in her own chest. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She looked at Victor's face, expecting the raw fury she had seen so often in Liam's eyes whenever he lost control. But there was no rage on Victor Russo’s features. There was only a chilling, absolute vacancy—the expression of an executioner checking the time before pulling a lever.
Behind Victor, two hulking men in tailored charcoal suits materialized from the shadowy alcove near the private dining booths. Neither spoke. Neither reached inside their coats. They simply stood three paces back, hands folded across their waists, their eyes locked on Liam’s throat.
The maître d' had backed so far into the wall his spine seemed welded to the wallpaper.
"Victor," Khloe whispered, her voice trembling. "Please..."
She didn't know whether she was begging for Liam's life or her own sanity. She had heard the rumors about the Russo family. Everyone in the city knew the name, whispered over cocktails in private clubs and printed in hushed tones in the business section whenever another rival corporation inexplicably folded overnight. Victor Russo was not a socialite. He was the apex predator of the city’s underground empire, a man whose smile preceded bankruptcies, disappearances, and quiet funerals.
Victor’s eyes flicked down to her face. For a fraction of a second, the lethal ice in his gaze softened, noting the pale exhaustion in her cheeks and the red crescent marks Liam's fingers were leaving against her pale skin.
Then his eyes returned to Liam.
"Two."
Liam tried to laugh, but the sound died in his throat, strangled by the suffocating tension in the room. The diners around them were frozen in horrified fascination. A wealthy couple two tables over quietly placed their napkins on their plates, stood up, and slipped out the side exit without asking for their check.
"You're crazy," Liam stammered, his fingers tightening reflexively on Khloe’s wrist in a desperate attempt to maintain control. "You touch me, and I'll have the cops here in five minutes. I'm a senior partner at—"
Victor moved.
He didn't wind up a punch. He didn't shout. In a motion so swift and precise it looked rehearsed, Victor reached forward, caught Liam’s thumb, and bent it backward toward his forearm.
A sickening *crack* echoed through the dining room.
Liam shrieked, a high-pitched wail of agony that shattered the restaurant's quiet elegance. His grip broke instantly. Khloe stumbled backward, clutching her wrist to her chest, her breath catching in her throat.
Before Liam could collapse or pull away, Victor’s other hand shot out, wrapping like an iron vise around the back of Liam's neck. He slammed Liam’s forehead down onto the mahogany table.
Silverware rattled violently. A wine glass tipped, spilling deep cabernet across the pristine white linen, soaking into bread plates and trickling over the polished edge like fresh blood.
Liam whimpered into the tablecloth, pinned beneath a single hand that didn't even tremble with effort.
"I didn't hear you say three," Victor whispered into Liam's ear. His voice was silky, conversational, almost intimate. "Do you know why? Because when a dog doesn't obey, you don't keep counting."
Liam gasped, choked on his own saliva, his shattered thumb dangling at an unnatural angle. "Please... please, man, God, please..."
"Look at her," Victor commanded, applying just enough downward pressure to grind Liam’s cheek against the spilled wine.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Khloe, please tell him—"
"Don't look at her with your mouth," Victor cut in coldly. "Look at her with your memory. Because this is the very last second you will ever spend in her presence. If you walk on the same sidewalk as her, if your name appears on her phone screen, if your shadow crosses her doorstep... I will not break a thumb next time. I will peel your life away layer by layer until there is nothing left of you to bury. Do you understand?"
"Yes! Yes! I swear to God, yes!"
Victor released him. He took a white linen handkerchief from his breast pocket, wiped the faint trace of moisture from his fingertips, and tossed the cloth onto Liam's ruined face.
"Get him out," Victor murmured without looking back.
The two charcoal-suited men stepped forward instantly. One seized Liam under the armpits, lifting him off the table as effortlessly as a sack of laundry, while the other shielded the exit, dragging the sniveling, weeping man out through the service door into the cold night air.
The room remained utterly silent.
Khloe stood trembling, leaning against the back of an empty chair, her knees threatening to buckle. Her wrist throbbed with a dull, burning heat.
Victor turned slowly toward her. His posture relaxed, the lethal menace vanishing as quickly as it had appeared, replaced once again by aristocratic grace. He stepped toward her, stopping just inches away.
May you like
"You're shaking," he said quietly.
