Chapter 7 - The Gilded Cage

The heavy oak and iron doors of the Russo estate swung shut behind them with a muffled, resonant thud that seemed to lock out the entire universe. Inside, the chill of the midnight wind vanished, replaced by the scent of aged cedarwood, expensive bourbon, and the subtle, lingering trace of gun oil and citrus cologne that clung to Victor Russo.
Khloe stood on the polished black marble of the grand foyer, her heels clicking softly as she hesitated. Overhead, an enormous chandelier made of cascading smoky quartz cast warm, golden fractals against towering limestone walls. It was breathtaking, imposing, and undeniably dangerous—an architectural masterpiece designed not just for living, but for surviving a siege.
"Marco," Victor said without turning his head.
From the shadows near the grand spiral staircase, a tall man stepped forward. He had silvering hair at his temples, sharp hawk-like eyes, and moved with the silent economy of a predator trained to kill before his target drew breath.
"Boss," Marco responded, nodding once with absolute deference.
"Khloe is the master of this house from this moment on," Victor stated, his voice calm, level, and brooking no contradiction. "Whatever she requests, she receives. Her safety is placed above every business interest we hold in the city. If a single hair on her head is disturbed, I will personally burn this district to ash."
Marco’s eyes flicked to Khloe for a fraction of a second—not with suspicion, but with immediate, calculating reassessment. He bowed his head slightly. "Understood, Mr. Russo. The east wing suite has been prepared. Fully secured, ballistic glass reinforced, fresh wardrobe sourced to her measurements."
Khloe’s pulse pounded in her throat. She gripped her purse tightly, still struggling to reconcile the quiet routine of her architect life with the sudden reality of being guarded like an empress. "Victor... you don't have to go this far. I just needed to get away from Liam. I don't want to cause an international incident."
Victor turned toward her. He raised his hand slowly, giving her ample time to pull away if she wished. When she didn't flinch, his thumb gently brushed against the side of her wrist.
A sharp wince escaped her lips.
Victor’s gaze darkened instantly. He caught her sleeve and gently drew back the soft fabric of her jacket. There, stark against her pale skin, were four deep, purplish bruises—the unmistakable imprint of Liam’s violent grip from the restaurant.
The temperature in the foyer seemed to plummet twenty degrees. Marco’s jaw tightened, and even the guards standing at the perimeter seemed to freeze in place.
"He marked you," Victor whispered, his voice dangerously soft. It was far more terrifying than a shout. It was the tone of a judge handing down an irrevocable sentence of execution.
"It just... happened fast," Khloe said, her voice shaking slightly under the sheer weight of his focus. "He lost his temper because I wouldn't sign over my design firm's partnership shares to him."
"He put his filthy hands on what belongs to the light, to bleed it for his own greed," Victor said, his thumb tenderly tracing the edge of the bruise without applying pressure. His touch was shockingly warm, gentle as velvet, standing in fierce contrast to the lethal fury burning in his dark eyes. "Tomorrow, he will learn the cost of that mistake. But tonight, you rest."
He looked up at Marco. "Have Dr. Harris bring the soothing balm for her wrist. Then bring me the surveillance taps on Liam Vance's penthouse."
"Right away, Boss."

Victor offered Khloe his arm again. She looked at the man the city feared, the ghost who commanded politicians and brought cartels to heel. Yet looking into his eyes, she saw only an unyielding shield. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arm around his, allowing the Devil himself to lead her into the heart of his sanctuary.
