Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Glass Tower

Morning broke over the mountain ridge, sending golden sunlight spilling through the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows of the estate's master terrace. Khloe stood by the railing, a cup of steaming black coffee cupped between her hands, dressed in an oversized cashmere sweater and tailored trousers that Marco had miraculously procured overnight.
Looking out over the skyline, she could see the city laid out like a miniature circuit board. In the distance, the glass-and-steel needle of Vance Capital rose above the financial district—Liam’s kingdom. Or at least, what Liam believed was his kingdom.
"You're awake early," a deep baritone sounded from behind her.
Khloe turned to find Victor stepping out onto the terrace. He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing powerful wrists and the subtle edge of an intricate black tattoo curling over his skin. He carried a leather-bound dossier under one arm.
"Architect's habit," Khloe admitted, offering a faint, self-deprecating smile. "My mind starts calculating structural integrity before the sun comes up. Speaking of which... this cantilevered terrace is magnificent. The weight distribution on a forty-foot overhang over a sheer cliff face is nearly impossible without secondary support pylons."
Victor paused, an eyebrow arching in genuine appreciation. "I brought in three master engineers from Milan to design this wing. None of them could explain the physics as concisely as you just did in two sentences."
Khloe felt a faint warmth rise to her cheeks. For three years, Liam had belittled her career, calling her blueprints 'expensive doodles' and treating her talent as an accessory to his social status. Hearing raw, intelligent respect in Victor’s voice hit her deeper than she expected.
Victor walked over to the glass table and set the dossier down, gesturing for her to join him. "Liam wasn't just after your design shares out of petty greed, Khloe."
Khloe pulled out a chair, her expression hardening. "What do you mean?"
"Liam has been underwater for eighteen months," Victor explained, opening the file to reveal bank statements, offshore wire transfers, and loan contracts stamped with ominous red seals. "He gambled away half his family trust in underground high-stakes baccarat tables in Macau. When the local banks refused to refinance his debt, he borrowed fifteen million dollars from the Valenti syndicate."
Khloe’s breath hitched. "The Valentis? The ones who control the southern docks?"
"The very same," Victor nodded coldly. "And Don Valenti is not a patient creditor. The deadline on that loan was yesterday midnight. Liam knew that your architectural firm held the exclusive city development licenses for the new harbor district—licenses worth over fifty million dollars on the open market. He was going to forge your signature, liquidate your company, and hand your life's work over to the mob to save his own skin."
Nausea twisted in Khloe’s stomach. She stared at the forged documents, seeing Liam’s sloppy attempts to trace her signature on corporate transfer deeds. He hadn't just humiliated her; he had orchestrated her complete financial and professional destruction.
"And if I had refused to sign?" she whispered, the reality crashing down on her. "At the restaurant... he wasn't going to let me leave, was he?"
Victor leaned across the table. His dark eyes locked onto hers with hypnotic intensity, devoid of pity, filled only with absolute, protective conviction.
"If I had not been at that restaurant, you would have been taken to an unmarked warehouse before sunrise," Victor said bluntly. "Liam is a coward backed into a corner, and cornered cowards are the most dangerous vermin on earth."
Khloe set her cup down, her fingers trembling slightly before she balled them into fists, fighting back the wave of vulnerability. "What do we do now?"

A slow, wolfish grin spread across Victor’s carved features. "We don't hide, Khloe. We show him what happens when you build a house on sand, and the storm arrives."
