Chapter 6 - Crossing the Threshold

The ride through the city was dead silent.

Khloe sat in the back of the armored black Maybach, staring out the tinted windows as the glittering neon of the downtown high-rises gave way to the winding, tree-lined roads of the northern cliffs. Victor sat beside her, tapping away at an encrypted tablet, his profile silhouetted against the dim interior lights.

Up front, his driver navigated with military precision, while an identical black SUV followed fifty yards behind them, maintaining a protective escort.

Khloe looked down at her lap. Her wrist was wrapped in a neat elastic bandage that Victor’s personal physician had applied twenty minutes earlier in the restaurant's private lounge. The throbbing had receded to a dull ache, but the knot of fear in her gut was only growing tighter.

"My cat," Khloe said suddenly, her voice cutting through the hum of the engine.

Victor looked up from his tablet. "Pardon?"

"My cat, Barnaby. He's in my apartment. If Liam's people broke in..." Her voice cracked, genuine panic leaking through her defenses.

"Luca secured your apartment ten minutes ago," Victor said calmly, setting the tablet face-down on the leather console. "Two men carrying crowbars and gasoline containers were intercepted in the alleyway behind your fire escape. They are currently being questioned in an undisclosed location. Your cat is unharmed, placed in a carrier, and is currently traveling in the trunk of the chase vehicle behind us."

Khloe stared at him, torn between overwhelming relief and utter shock at the terrifying efficiency of his network. "You... you grabbed my cat?"

"I believe in thoroughness," Victor replied without a hint of irony. "And you wouldn't sleep if he were alone."

The car slowed, turning off the main road onto a private, cobblestone driveway flanked by high wrought-iron gates topped with security spikes. The gates swept inward automatically as the Maybach approached. As they passed through, Khloe caught sight of two heavily armed guards stationed inside an armored gatehouse, automatic rifles slung across their chests.

They drove through dense, manicured pine groves before the estate opened up before them.

It was breathtaking. The mansion was a stunning fusion of limestone and modern glass, rising like a dark castle against the midnight sky, overlooking the glittering expanse of the entire city valley below. Warm amber lights glowed from towering windows, illuminating marble courtyards, reflecting pools, and sculpted terraces.

The car came to a smooth halt in front of the sweeping double staircase of the main entrance.

The driver opened Khloe’s door. Stepping out into the crisp mountain air, she felt an overwhelming sense of finality. The city she knew—her simple, independent life, her cozy walk-up apartment, her quiet routines—felt a thousand miles away.

Victor stepped out beside her, buttoning his suit jacket. He walked up the first two steps, then paused, turning back to offer her his hand.

"This is the threshold, Khloe," he said, his voice carrying clearly over the whispering pines. "If you walk through these doors tonight, you are no longer just an architect surviving on your own. You become someone under the personal protection of the Russo name. Every enemy I have will see you. Every law I break will touch you. There is no half-measure in my world."

Khloe looked down at his outstretched hand. The broad, powerful fingers, the dark signet ring, the quiet promise of total safety wrapped in deadly danger.

Behind her, the heavy iron gates at the bottom of the hill slammed shut with a resounding, final clang.

Liam had hunted her like prey. But standing before Victor Russo, she knew that if she took his hand, she would never be prey again.

She lifted her chin, met his dark, unblinking gaze, and placed her hand inside his.

Victor’s fingers closed around hers with firm, unwavering warmth.

"Good girl," he whispered, a dangerous smile touching his lips. "Now let's teach your ex what happens when you steal from the Devil."
