Chapter 11 - The Broken Seal

Forty-eight hours later, the Grand Metropolitan Gala was in full swing at the historic Plaza Ballroom.
The elite of New York—senators, billionaires, media moguls, and high-society royalty—mingled beneath towering vaulted ceilings hung with crystal chandeliers and draped in ivory silk. Yet, despite the orchestra playing softly in the mezzanine, every whisper in the room revolved around a single, seismic event.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, Victor Russo appeared.
He was dressed in an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, looking every bit the sovereign ruler of the city's hidden empires. But it was not Victor who stole the breath from the room.
It was the woman on his arm.
Khloe was a vision of breathtaking, lethal elegance. She wore a backless midnight-blue silk gown that cascaded like liquid starlight down to the floor. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, exposing the diamond choker at her throat—a Russo family heirloom that signaled to every underworld capo in the tri-state area that she was untouchable. Her chin was held high, her poise radiating an unshakeable confidence that captivated every camera lens in the hall.
Liam Vance’s disgraced family was conspicuously absent, erased from the guest list like ink washed out by rain.
"They're staring," Khloe murmured under her breath, a small, triumphant smile playing on her crimson lips as they descended the stairs.
"Let them," Victor replied smoothly, covering her hand on his arm with his own. "They are looking at the only woman who holds the master keys to the Russo syndicate."
They reached the floor, where Marco and four discreet security operatives formed an invisible, impenetrable barrier around them. For the first two hours, the evening was a masterclass in absolute dominance. Rival families bowed their heads to Victor, politicians sought Khloe's architectural firm for state infrastructure contracts, and the shadow of Liam Vance seemed completely buried in the past.
At 11:15 PM, Victor leaned down to Khloe’s ear. "I need to step into the private lounge for three minutes to finalize the maritime transport permits with Senator Hayes. Marco will stay at your side."
Khloe touched his lapel gently. "Go. I’ll be fine right here by the terrace."
Victor kissed her forehead softly before disappearing through the carved mahogany doors of the VIP suite.
Khloe turned toward the terrace, accepting a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter. The cool evening air drifting from the balcony felt refreshing against her skin.
Then, without a sound, the grand chandeliers overhead flickered once.
Twice.
*SNAP.*
The entire ballroom plunged into pitch-black darkness.
Gasps and shrieks of confusion rippled through the hundreds of guests. In the suffocating black, the heavy backup generator failed to kick on.
"Khloe!" Marco’s voice barked through the dark, instantly urgent, the sound of a gun being unholstered slicing through the air. "Stay where you are! Cover—"
A sharp, muffled *THWIP* cut Marco off. A heavy body hit the polished parquet floor with a dull thud.
Khloe’s breath stopped. "Marco?!"
She reached out blindly into the dark, her hands meeting empty air. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded her veins. She turned to run back toward the VIP lounge where Victor was—
Suddenly, a gloved hand wrapped around her mouth from behind, violently cutting off her scream. An iron arm locked around her ribs, hoisting her off her feet with brutal force.
A radio transceiver clicked on right next to her ear.
Through the tiny speaker, a harsh, twisted voice rasped over the static—a voice that didn't belong to Liam Vance, but to someone far worse, someone Liam had sold his soul to:

*"We have the Boss’s new queen. The trap is sprung. Blow the east wing and bring the van around."*
Before Khloe could fight, the heavy scent of chloroform filled her nostrils, and the glittering world of Victor Russo went completely, terrifyingly dark.
