Chapter 9 - THE TWIN TRUST

Five years after the hospital incident.
On a beautiful autumn afternoon in East Hampton, the leaves of the oak trees had turned brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold.
The Vance Estate was decorated with colorful banners, balloons, and outdoor games for a grand event: Maya and Leo's 5th Birthday Celebration.
Dozens of children from the local community, hospital staff families, and corporate foundation partners ran across the wide green lawn, playing tag, eating ice cream, and laughing under the crisp blue sky.
Dr. Naomi Price sat on the porch bench, sipping apple cider, watching Maya and Leo blow out the candles on a massive superhero-and-princess themed birthday cake.
Arthur Vance, now eighty-two but still sharp and energetic, stood beside the cake, clapping proudly as the children cheered.
Clara walked over to Naomi, sitting down beside her on the porch, holding two glasses of warm cider.
"They're five years old today, Naomi," Clara said softly, watching her twins laugh as they distributed cake slices to their friends. "Five years since that night in OR 4."
"And look at them," Naomi smiled warmly, leaning back against the wooden bench. "Happy, healthy, loved, and completely free."
"I received a letter from Fort Dix prison yesterday," Clara mentioned casually, taking a sip of cider.
Naomi turned her head sharply. "Daniel?"
"Yes," Clara nodded calmly. "His legal team submitted an application for early parole review based on good behavior."
"Did you oppose it?"
"I didn't need to," Clara replied with a gentle smile. "The parole board reviewed his psychological evaluation and denied the petition automatically. He won't be eligible again for five years."
Naomi let out a quiet, satisfied breath. "And Tessa?"
"Tessa was transferred to a minimum-security facility in Vermont last year," Clara said. "She's serving her full term. Her father never visited her once."
Clara looked out at her twins, who were now running toward the porch, holding two large wrapped gift boxes.
"Mommy! Look! Great-Grandpa gave us our new adventure books!" Leo cheered, hopping up the porch steps.
"And he said we get to visit the zoo in Zurich next month!" Maya added, her bright blue eyes sparkling with excitement.
Clara leaned down, hugging both of her children tightly against her heart. "You can go anywhere in the world you want, my loves."
"Because we're fighters?" Maya asked innocently, tilting her head.
May you like
Clara looked into her daughter's eyes, then over at Naomi and Arthur, her heart overflowing with a profound, eternal love.
"Because you are loved," Clara whispered softly, kissing her forehead. "And love is the greatest strength in the world."
