Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM COLLAPSE

The glass conference room on the 50th floor of the Mercer Global Tower overlooked the stormy skyline of Manhattan.

At 8:50 AM on Monday, the atmosphere inside was suffused with suffocating tension. Twelve senior board members sat around the massive polished mahogany table, whispering nervously amongst themselves.

At the head of the table sat Daniel Mercer. He wore a brand-new Italian suit, but no amount of expensive tailoring could hide the dark circles under his hollow eyes, his pale skin, or his visibly trembling hands.

Beside him sat his lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Arthur), who was nervously shuffling through financial reports.

"Where is the Rowan investment group?" Daniel hissed in a frantic whisper, checking his gold wristwatch. "Richard Rowan was supposed to be here ten minutes ago with the five-hundred-million-dollar equity bailout!"

"I've called his office six times, Daniel," Marcus whispered back, wiping sweat from his forehead. "His secretary says Mr. Rowan is currently in an emergency meeting with his legal counsel. He's not coming."

Daniel's heart slammed against his ribs like a trapped bird. "He has to come! If he doesn't purchase the primary debt shares by nine AM, the voting rights default to the primary trust!"

Before Marcus could answer, the double frosted glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Every board member stood up instantly.

Walking into the room was Clara Mercer. She wore an immaculate ivory power suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun. She walked with complete grace and steady posture, showing no remaining trace of the trauma surgery she had endured just five days prior.

Flanking her left was Arthur Vance, his silver cane clicking sharply against the marble floor. Flanking her right was Federal Prosecutor Evelyn Reed, carrying a leather briefcase.

Daniel stumbled backward in his chair, staring at his wife as if she were a ghost. "Clara...?"

Clara walked smoothly to the foot of the conference table, placing her palms flat against the polished wood. She looked directly at Daniel, her gaze cool, dismissive, and utterly devoid of emotion.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Clara spoke, her voice clear and resonant, echoing effortlessly through the quiet room. "Please, take your seats."

The board members sat down immediately, completely mesmerized by her commanding presence.

"This is an internal executive meeting, Clara!" Daniel shouted, trying to force authority into his trembling voice. "You have no legal standing to be in this boardroom!"

"Section 4, Paragraph 12 of the Mercer Global Charter," Evelyn Reed stated calmly, pulling an authenticated legal deed from her briefcase and sliding it across the table. "Upon the birth of legitimate male and female heirs to the primary founder's bloodline, all voting proxies held by the temporary acting CEO revert immediately to the managing trustee. Mrs. Clara Mercer holds fifty-two percent of voting equity as of 12:01 AM today."

The room erupted into loud, shocked chatter.

"No! That's impossible!" Daniel yelled, turning to his attorney. "Marcus, tell them that's impossible!"

Marcus looked at the legal document, his face draining of all color. He slowly closed his briefcase and looked away from Daniel. "It's valid, Daniel. The covenant was signed by your father in 1998. You're no longer the CEO."

Daniel felt the floor beneath him dissolve. He collapsed back into his chair, breathing heavily, staring at Clara in utter disbelief.

"You... you planned this," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "All those years... you pretended to be helpless... you let me think I was in control..."

"I didn't pretend, Daniel," Clara said softly, stepping closer to his chair. "I gave you five years to be a husband. I gave you five years to build an honest life. But you chose greed, you chose betrayal, and you chose to stand in a hospital hallway celebrating my death with Tessa Rowan."

Before Daniel could respond, the heavy glass doors opened once more.

Four uniformed federal agents stepped inside, accompanied by two NYPD officers.

The lead federal agent walked straight past the board members, stopping directly behind Daniel's chair.

"Daniel Mercer?" the agent asked sternly.

Daniel blinked, terrified. "Yes...?"

"You are under arrest for corporate tax evasion, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud," the agent announced loudly, pulling steel handcuffs from his belt.

"What?! No! There's been a mistake!" Daniel screamed, scrambling backward out of his chair. "I didn't steal anything! Check the Cayman accounts! Tessa Rowan handles those transfers!"

"Miss Tessa Rowan was arrested forty-five minutes ago at JFK Airport while attempting to board a private flight to London," the agent replied coldly, grabbing Daniel's arms and twisting them behind his back. "She gave a full recorded statement implicating you in the entire offshore scheme."

CLICK-CLACK.

The cold steel handcuffs snapped tight around Daniel's wrists.

"Clara! Help me!" Daniel sobbed openly as the agents dragged him toward the door, his polished shoes dragging uselessly against the floor. "Clara! I'm the father of your children! You can't do this to me!"

Clara stood tall at the head of the table, watching her husband dragged away in chains without a single tear in her eyes.

She turned back to the remaining board members, who were sitting in breathless, terrified silence.

"Gentlemen," Clara said calmly, buttoning her ivory suit jacket. "Shall we begin restructuring the board?"
