Chapter 2 - SURVIVING THE STORM

The private recovery room on the sixth floor was dim, lit only by the warm glow of the heart monitors and the city lights filtering through the blinds.

Clara Mercer opened her eyes slowly. Her body felt heavy, bruised, and exhausted from twelve hours of emergency surgery. The faint smell of lavender oil filled her senses.

"She's awake, Doctor," a nurse whispered softly.

Dr. Naomi Price walked over to the side of the bed, checking the digital readout on the IV pump. Her stern expression softened into a look of genuine warmth as she looked down at Clara.

"Dr. Price..." Clara’s voice was barely a raspy whisper. "My... my babies?"

"They are in the neonatal ICU, completely stable," Dr. Price answered gently, placing a warm hand on Clara’s shoulder. "A boy and a girl. Four pounds eight ounces, and five pounds even. They have strong lungs, Clara. They’re fighters. Just like their mother."

Tears trickled down Clara’s pale cheeks, soaking into the white pillowcase. For nine months, she had carried this dangerous secret alone.

When she discovered her pregnancy at six weeks, her private OB-GYN had found two faint heartbeats. But three weeks later, Clara discovered the hidden text messages on her husband's phone—proof of his two-year affair with Tessa Rowan, the daughter of Mercer Global's largest rival investor. She realized then that if Daniel and Tessa knew she was carrying the ultimate legal heirs to the Mercer estate, her life and her children's lives would be in grave danger.

So, Clara paid her private doctor to forge her medical records, showing only a single, fragile pregnancy. She played the dutiful, naive wife, waiting for the exact right moment to break free.

"Thank you, Naomi," Clara whispered. "Is... is he outside?"

Dr. Price’s jaw tightened. "Daniel is sitting in the waiting area. I had security sweep the floor and revoke Tessa Rowan's visitor clearance permanently. But Daniel is demanding to see you."

Clara took a slow, deep breath, feeling the sharp ache in her abdomen. "Let him in."

Dr. Price frowned. "Clara, you just came out of trauma surgery—"

"I need him to see me, Naomi," Clara interrupted, her soft voice laced with an undeniable, quiet steel. "I need him to look at what he tried to discard."

A minute later, the heavy oak door clicked open.

Daniel stepped into the room. He looked terrible—his eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled, and his expensive suit jacket was gone. He walked toward the bed as if approaching an executioner.

"Clara..." Daniel croaked, stopping two feet away from the bed. "My God, Clara... I thought... they told me there were complications..."

"You thought I was dead, Daniel," Clara said calmly, looking straight into his eyes.

Daniel flinched as if struck. "No! I never wanted that! I swear to you, I never wanted you to get hurt!"

"You stood in the hallway with her," Clara continued, her tone dangerously even. "While I was bleeding out on an operating table, you held Tessa Rowan's hand. Did you think her father's venture capital firm would save you once I was gone?"

"Clara, please listen to me," Daniel begged, stepping closer and reaching out to touch her hand. "Tessa manipulated me! She lied to me about her father's board votes! I was confused, I was under pressure from the Mercer board—"

"Do not touch me, Daniel," Clara commanded softly.

Daniel froze, his hand hovering in the air before he slowly pulled it back, trembling.

"You married me because my grandfather held thirty percent of Mercer Global's preferred shares," Clara said, leaning back against her pillows. "You treated me like a ghost in your house for five years. But those shares were transferred into a private family trust the moment my children were born thirty minutes ago."

Daniel’s face drained of color. "What are you saying?"

"I am saying that you no longer hold a controlling interest in your own company," Clara said smoothly. "And tomorrow morning, my attorneys will serve you with divorce papers and a petition for sole custody."

"Clara, you can't do this!" Daniel panicked, his voice rising. "Mercer Global is my life! My father built that company!"

"Then you should have spent more time protecting your legacy and less time celebrating my death in the hallway," Clara replied coldly.

She pressed the nurse call button beside her bed. Within ten seconds, two uniformed security guards stepped into the room.

"Please escort Mr. Mercer to the main lobby," Clara instructed without looking at him. "He is no longer permitted on this floor."

"Clara! Don't do this! We can talk about this!" Daniel shouted as the guards firmly grabbed his arms, guiding him out into the corridor. "Clara!"

The heavy oak door shut, cutting off his frantic cries.

Clara closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The weakness was leaving her body, replaced by a cold, unstoppable determination. She reached over to her bedside table, picking up a small leather-bound notebook.

She opened it to the first page, revealing a detailed timeline of Mercer Global's offshore accounts, fraudulent tax filings, and Tessa Rowan's illegal insider trading records—documents Clara had spent three years silently copying from Daniel's private study.

She picked up her phone and dialed a private number.

An elderly, powerful voice answered on the third ring: "Clara, my dear. Is it done?"

"It's done, Grandfather," Clara said, her voice steady and resolute. "The twins are safe. It's time to take back Mercer Global."
