Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW NETWORK

The rain poured heavily over downtown Manhattan, washing over the glass towers of the financial district.
Inside the penthouse suite of the Grand Hyatt, Tessa Rowan paced furiously across the plush velvet rug. Her emerald silk dress was creased, her hair messily pulled back. On the marble coffee table lay three empty wine glasses and an overturned tablet displaying stock market feeds.
Sitting across from her was her father, Richard Rowan—a ruthless billionaire venture capitalist with cold blue eyes and silver hair.
"You idiot, Tessa," Richard spat, swirling his bourbon. "I told you to keep your distance from Daniel until the merger went through! Now you've gotten yourself banned from St. Catherine's Hospital, and the press is already whispering about a scandal!"
"He lied to me, Dad!" Tessa shrieked, slamming her palm onto the back of a leather chair. "Daniel told me Clara was a weak, frail house-wife who didn't even know how to check her own trust fund! Suddenly she delivers twins, and Dr. Price kicks me off the floor like a common criminal!"
"Clara Mercer isn't frail," Richard said coldly, setting his glass down with a heavy clack. "Her grandfather is Arthur Vance—the founder of Vance International. He built the original infrastructure for Mercer Global forty years ago."
Tessa froze. "Arthur Vance? The old recluse who lives in Zurich?"
"He hasn't been in Zurich for two months," Richard revealed, pulling a paper file from his briefcase. "He's been sitting in a penthouse three blocks from St. Catherine's Hospital, watching every move you and Daniel made. Clara wasn't hiding from you, Tessa. She was setting a trap."
Tessa’s chest heaved with panic. "What kind of trap?"
"Arthur Vance executed a secret stock call option two hours ago," Richard explained, his voice tight with anger. "The thirty percent share block Clara held was combined with Vance International's holdings. Together, they now control fifty-one percent of Mercer Global's voting equity. Daniel Mercer is no longer the CEO. He's a minority shareholder about to be ousted at Monday's emergency board meeting."
Tessa backed away, hitting the edge of the glass desk. "If Daniel loses Mercer Global... his stock value plunges to zero. Our investment... my marriage plans..."
"There will be no marriage," Richard stated bluntly. "You are going to pack your bags and leave for London tonight. If the media links you to Clara's attempted negligence suit, the Rowan name will be dragged through the mud."
"No!" Tessa yelled, her eyes flashing with wild, unstable anger. "I spent two years playing the dutiful mistress! I swallowed my pride, I sneaked around back doors, I gave Daniel the insider codes to bypass his father's estate trust! I am not leaving until I get what I was promised!"
Richard stood up, towering over his daughter. "You have nothing left to leverage, Tessa! Daniel is ruined!"
"He still has the Mercer family estate in the Hamptons," Tessa whispered, a terrifying, dark smile spreading across her face. "And the digital keys to the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. He gave them to me last month as a sign of 'faith'."
Richard stared at his daughter, realizing how deep her obsession ran. "Tessa... what are you planning?"
"If Clara thinks she can take everything and leave me with nothing," Tessa hissed, pulling her phone from her purse, "she's about to find out how dangerous a woman with nothing to lose really is."
Meanwhile, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Catherine's, the room was quiet save for the rhythmic, soothing hum of the incubators.
Clara sat in a wheelchair, wearing a warm cashmere cardigan over her hospital gown. She reached her hand through the small circular portal of the incubator, gently touching the tiny, warm fingers of her newborn daughter, Maya. In the adjacent incubator slept her son, Leo.
Dr. Naomi Price stood beside her, holding two medical update clipboards.
"Their oxygen levels are perfect, Clara," Naomi said softly. "They'll be out of the incubators by Friday."
Clara smiled warmly, a tear of relief sparkling in her eye. "Thank you, Naomi. For everything. For keeping my secret for nine months."
"I delivered you thirty years ago, Clara," Naomi said, placing a affectionate hand on Clara's head. "I wasn't going to let Daniel Mercer or that Rowan girl destroy your family."
The heavy double doors of the NICU opened softly.
An elderly man in an immaculate dark charcoal suit stepped inside, leaning on a silver-headed walking cane. His silver hair was neatly combed, his expression stern yet filled with immense pride.
"Grandfather," Clara called out, turning her wheelchair around.
Arthur Vance walked over, his heavy cane tapping rhythmically against the polished floor. He looked into the incubators, his stern face melting into a gentle, soft smile.
"They have your mother's eyes, Clara," Arthur whispered, resting his hand on Clara's shoulder. "Small, but fierce."
"Did the board meeting go as planned?" Clara asked softly.
"The board meeting is set for Monday morning at nine AM," Arthur replied, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal tone. "Daniel spent the afternoon trying to secure emergency loans from Manhattan banks, but every door was closed before he even walked in. He has no money, no allies, and no way out."
"And Tessa Rowan?"
"She's hiding in her father's hotel," Arthur said. "But my intelligence team intercepted an encrypted transfer request from her personal laptop an hour ago. She's trying to drain the Cayman accounts before Daniel realizes what's happening."
Clara looked back at her sleeping twins, her eyes hardening into cold steel.
"Let her drain them," Clara said smoothly.
Arthur raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Let her?"
"Those Cayman accounts weren't filled with Mercer money, Grandfather," Clara revealed, a small, brilliant smile touching her lips. "I redirected Daniel's offshore routes six months ago. Those accounts belong to the Federal Internal Revenue Service audit trap. The moment Tessa executes that transfer, she isn't stealing Daniel's fortune—she's committing federal wire fraud."

Arthur stared at his granddaughter for three seconds, then let out a booming, delighted laugh that echoed through the quiet unit.
"You truly are a Vance, my dear," Arthur chuckled, kissing her forehead. "Tomorrow, the storm arrives."
