Chapter 5 - THE CELL AND THE SILENCE

The holding facility at the Metropolitan Correction Center smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale fear.

Inside the small, windowless interrogation room, Tessa Rowan sat behind a cold steel table. Her emerald silk dress was gone, replaced by a dark orange jumpsuit. Her hair was messy, her eyes red-rimmed from hours of crying, her manicured nails bitten down to the quick.

Sitting across from her was Federal Prosecutor Evelyn Reed, flanked by Detective Miller of the NYPD Financial Crimes Division.

"Let me review your statement, Miss Rowan," Evelyn said dryly, turning a page in her folder. "You claim that Daniel Mercer coerced you into initiating the five-million-dollar wire transfer from the Cayman account last night?"

"Yes! Exactly!" Tessa shrieked desperately, leaning across the table, her hand cuffs rattling against the steel surface. "Daniel gave me the encryption key! He told me the money was his private dividend! I didn't know it was an IRS audit trap set by Clara!"

Detective Miller let out a dry, mocking chuckle. "Miss Rowan, we retrieved your laptop from your luggage at JFK. The digital timestamps show you initiated the transfer three hours after Daniel was removed from the hospital system. You weren't executing his orders. You were trying to steal the money for yourself and flee the country."

Tessa's jaw trembled. "I... I was scared! My father abandoned me! Daniel was ruined! What was I supposed to do?!"

"You were supposed to refrain from committing grand felony fraud," Evelyn said coldly, shutting the folder. "Your father's legal team submitted a formal notice thirty minutes ago. Richard Rowan has publicly disowned you and refused to post your bail."

Tessa froze, her eyes widening in horrific shock. "My... my dad disowned me?"

"You're facing twelve to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, Tessa," Evelyn stated plainly. "And because Clara Mercer filed an additional civil suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress and stalker harassment, every asset in your personal trust has been frozen."

Tessa buried her face in her cuffed hands, breaking into loud, hysterical sob. The glamorous life, the high-fashion dresses, the dream of ruling Mercer Global—everything had turned into a cold steel cage.

Two doors down the same corridor, Daniel Mercer sat in an identical interrogation room.

His crisp Italian suit was rumpled, his tie removed for safety protocols. He stared blankly at the polished metal table, his mind completely numb.

The heavy steel door clicked open.

Daniel looked up hastily, expecting his attorney. But standing in the doorway was Dr. Naomi Price, wearing a clean civilian trench coat, carrying a thick white envelope.

"Dr. Price...?" Daniel rasped, his voice hollow. "Did... did Clara send you? Is she dropping the charges?!"

Naomi walked into the room, stopping on the opposite side of the table. She didn't sit down. She looked down at Daniel with a look of profound, quiet pity.

"Clara didn't send me to drop charges, Daniel," Naomi said smoothly. "She sent me to deliver these."

Naomi opened the white envelope and placed two crisp documents on the metal table.

Daniel looked down at the top page: FINAL PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE & SOLE CUSTODY.

Beneath it was a second document: TERMINATION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS BASED ON FELONY CONVICTION.

Daniel’s breathing hitched. Tears welled in his eyes as he looked up at the doctor. "No... no, please, Naomi... I'm their father. I want to see my children. Just let me hold them once..."

"You had nine months to be a father, Daniel," Naomi said, her voice dropping to a stern, unyielding whisper. "You spent those nine months planning how to divide Clara's estate with Tessa Rowan. You stood outside OR 4 and celebrated when you thought your wife was dead."

"I was stupid! I was tempted!" Daniel wept, slamming his cuffed hands against the table. "I love my children!"

"You don't love those babies, Daniel," Naomi countered fiercely. "You love the status they represent. You love the power you lost. Clara has officially changed their legal surnames to Vance."

"Vance?!" Daniel gasped, his chest heaving. "They're Mercers! They carry my blood!"

"They carry Clara's strength," Naomi corrected sharply. "They will grow up in a world where your name is nothing more than a cautionary footnote in a business textbook."

Naomi picked up her umbrella, turning toward the door.

"Wait! Naomi, please!" Daniel pleaded, trying to stand up, but his leg chains yanked him back into the chair with a loud metallic crash. "Tell Clara I'm sorry! Tell her I love her! Please!"

Naomi paused at the doorway, turning her head slightly.

May you like

"She already knows who you are, Daniel," Naomi said quietly. "And that's why she's finally free."

The heavy steel door slammed shut, locking Daniel inside the cold, echoing silence of his own creation.
