Chapter 1 - THE TWIN SECRETS

The harsh fluorescent lights of the Neonatal & Maternity Ward corridor at St. Catherine's Hospital flickered with a cold, sterile hum. Smells of antiseptic and copper hung heavy in the air.

Through the reinforced glass doors of Operating Room 4, a motionless shape lay beneath a stark white surgical sheet. Outside in the hallway, Daniel Mercer stood with his shirt collar unbuttoned, his hand trembling as he leaned against the wall. At thirty-four, Daniel was the heir to Mercer Global, a man whose polished wealth was currently cracking beneath the weight of overwhelming guilt.

Beside him stood Tessa Rowan. Dressed in a tailored emerald silk dress, her sharp jawline and perfectly styled hair made her look like she belonged on a fashion runway rather than an emergency wing.

Tessa reached out, clasping Daniel’s cold hand. Looking through the glass at the white sheet, she pressed two manicured fingers to her lips, letting out a quiet, relieved smirk. In her mind, the obstacle was gone. Clara, Daniel's quiet and obedient wife of five years, was dead. The fortune, the Mercer legacy, and Daniel were finally hers alone.

Tessa leaned close, whispering softly into Daniel’s ear: “It’s over, Daniel.”

Daniel didn't answer. His chest heaved with a sickening mixture of relief and horror. For months, Tessa had convinced him that Clara was merely a loveless political arrangement, an anchor dragging down his ambition. But seeing the silent room beyond the glass, a sudden, cold dread settled deep in his gut.

Before he could pull away, the double swinging doors of the operating room burst open.

Dr. Naomi Price stepped out into the corridor. In her late forties, stern and formidable, Dr. Price was the Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Her light blue surgical gown was heavily stained with dried blood across the front. She pulled off her latex gloves with a sharp snap, her icy grey eyes locking directly onto Tessa and Daniel.

Dr. Price stopped three feet away, her posture rigid, her voice ringing out in a flat, controlled tone: “Don’t celebrate yet. It’s twins.”

The silence that followed was deafening.

Tessa’s confident smirk completely vanished. The color drained from her face in an instant, leaving her sickly pale beneath her foundation. Her eyes widened in pure, chaotic shock.

Daniel gasped, dropping his jaw. The moment the word twins left the doctor’s mouth, Daniel pulled his hand away from Tessa’s grip as if her skin had turned to burning ash. He took a rapid step backward, his back hitting the cold tile wall in sheer panic.

From behind the swinging glass doors of the recovery room, the sharp, healthy cries of two newborn babies suddenly echoed through the corridor.

Tessa turned on Daniel, her voice rising in a panicked whisper laced with venomous betrayal: “Twins? You told me there was only one!”

"I... I didn't know!" Daniel stammered, his hands shaking violently. "Clara's ultrasound reports... she only ever brought home scans showing one baby!"

Dr. Price took a step forward, placing her body squarely between Daniel and Tessa. She adjusted her clipboard, looking at Tessa with profound disgust.

Tessa lifted her chin defiantly, trying to regain her regal composure despite her trembling knees. “You have no right to talk to us like that, Doctor! I’m his family!”

Dr. Price’s gaze turned cold and resolute. “No. You aren’t. Security, escort her out.”

A broad-shouldered security officer stepped out from the alcove near the elevators, moving swiftly toward Tessa.

"Daniel! Tell them who I am!" Tessa shrieked softly, stepping back as the guard placed a firm hand near her elbow. "Daniel, do something!"

Daniel stood paralyzed against the wall. He stared at the floor, refusing to meet her eyes, refusing to say a single word in her defense.

The officer guided a stunned, frantically calculating Tessa down the hallway toward the waiting elevator. As the steel doors began to slide shut, Tessa glared through the narrowing gap at Daniel, her eyes filled with promise of absolute destruction.

Inside the quiet corridor, Daniel remained frozen, surrounded by the echoes of twin cries and the crushing realization that his entire life was about to burn to the ground.
