Chapter 8 - The Public Humiliation

The Thorne Estate was illuminated like a palace under siege.

Hundreds of luxury limousines lined the private winding driveway. Spotlights carved brilliant white beams into the cloudy midnight sky. Inside the great hall, the elite of high society sipped vintage Dom Pérignon, surrounded by television cameras and tech journalists.

On the raised platform beneath the glittering three-million-dollar chandelier, Julian Thorne beamed. Beside him, Elena looked breathtaking in a plunging scarlet gown, the stolen emerald necklace resting against her collarbone like a trophy.

Julian tapped his microphone, silencing the murmurs of the crowd.

"Ladies, gentlemen, distinguished partners," Julian began, his voice overflowing with charismatic confidence. "Tonight marks the dawn of a new era. Despite personal heartbreak—as many of you know, my beloved Clara remains under psychiatric care following her sudden nervous breakdown—we must soldier forward. Tonight, Thorne Logistics becomes the primary supply-chain provider for the eastern seaboard!"

The room erupted into applause. Flashbulbs went off in rapid bursts.

"And to celebrate this triumph," Julian added, turning to Elena with a smoldering gaze, "I would like to introduce my new chief operating officer, and the woman who has stood by me through the darkest storms... Elena."

Elena smiled, leaning in to kiss him as the cameras flashed.

*BAM!*

The massive, double oak doors at the entrance of the ballroom were kicked open with explosive force.

The heavy thud echoed off the vaulted ceiling, silencing the applause instantly. The orchestra stopped playing mid-measure. Every head in the room turned toward the entrance.

Four armed federal marshals in dark windbreakers strode in first, followed by Marcus Vance, looking imposing and lethal in a midnight-black tuxedo.

And walking between them, commanding every single inch of the room, was Clara.

She wore a custom-fitted white silk pantsuit that hugged her slender, recovered silhouette. Her head was held impossibly high. She wore no makeup except for bold crimson lipstick, deliberately leaving the faint, faded yellow bruises on her jaw and neck completely visible for the high-definition cameras to broadcast.

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the room.

"Julian," Clara’s voice rang out, clear, resonant, and amplified by the stone acoustics. "You shouldn't give away job titles on property you don't own."
