Chapter 6 - Vanishing Act

White fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead.
The steady, rhythmic *beep... beep... beep* of a heart monitor was the first sound that broke through the heavy fog in Clara’s mind. She gasped, her eyes snapping open, her hands instinctively flying toward her stomach.
It was flat.
"No!" Clara shrieked, thrashing against the hospital bed. "No, no, no! My baby!"
"Clara! Clara, look at me!"
A firm, grounding pair of hands caught her wrists. She blinked rapidly through hot tears, looking up into the exhausted, shadowed face of Marcus Vance. He was still wearing his rumpled dress shirt, his tie undone, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes.
"Where is she?" Clara sobbed, her fingernails digging into Marcus's forearms. "Tell me she's alive! Please, Marcus!"
Marcus stepped aside, gently pulling back a pale blue curtain beside the bed.
There, resting inside a state-of-the-art neonatal incubator, was a tiny, perfect human being. A full head of dark, silky hair, delicate rosebud lips, and tiny fists curled tightly against her chest. A small plastic tag on the transparent crib read: *Baby Girl Thorne.*
"She was born four pounds, eight ounces," Marcus said softly, his voice thick with uncharacteristic warmth. "She had a minor respiratory distress due to the trauma, but Dr. Chen got her out in time. She’s breathing on her own. She is an absolute fighter, Clara. Just like her mother."
Clara collapsed against the pillows, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated relief. For the first time in nine months, the suffocating knot in her chest unraveled. Her daughter was alive.
"How long have I been asleep?" Clara asked, wiping her cheeks with the back of her trembling hand.
"Forty-eight hours," Marcus said, pulling a sleek tablet from his leather briefcase and sitting on the edge of the chair beside her. "And a lot has happened while you were resting."
He tapped the screen and slid it onto her lap.
The headline of the *Wall Street Journal* blared across the display:
**THORNE ENTERPRISES UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR SECURITIES FRAUD; CEO’S PREGNANT WIFE REPORTED MISSING.**
Clara read the lines in stunned silence. Julian had filed a missing person report, claiming Clara had suffered an emotional breakdown and walked into the night, taking millions in bearer bonds with her. He was painting himself as the tragic, devoted husband betrayed by an unstable spouse.
"He thinks he has the narrative under control," Marcus said, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "What he doesn't know is that while he was busy staging his press conference, my team audited the master trust deed he forced you to sign over the years."
Marcus leaned forward, his eyes boring into hers. "He made a fatal mistake, Clara. When he transferred the Thorne estate and your father's logistics empire into his shell corporation, he didn't realize your father had a sovereign indemnity clause. Under maritime commercial law, those assets could never be transferred without your explicit, notarized biometric thumbprint. Julian used a forged digital signature."
Clara’s heart pounded. "Which means..."
"Which means legally, Julian Thorne owns nothing," Marcus said. "The house, the accounts, the intellectual property—it’s all yours. Every single cent. But Julian has no idea. He thinks he's finalizing the sale of the estate to an offshore consortium tomorrow night."
"Who is the consortium?" Clara asked, a spark of cold fury reigniting in her amber eyes.

Marcus tapped his own chest. "Me."
