Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Hallway

Clara dragged her bruised, aching body toward the door. Every fiber of her being screamed in agony. She raised a fist, ready to bang on the wood, but paused. If Julian heard her first, he would finish what he started before the guests could witness his cruelty.

She needed to be smart. She reached into her pocket. Her phone was gone—Elena had snatched it earlier—but her fingers brushed against a heavy brass bottle opener left on the bottom shelf.

Clara took the heavy brass tool and began scraping it rhythmically against the metal ventilation duct. *Tap. Tap-tap. Tap.*

An SOS. The universal distress signal her father had taught her when they sailed the Atlantic during her childhood.

Outside in the dimly lit back hall, the footsteps abruptly stopped.

"Julian’s security is remarkably sloppy," a quiet, deep voice murmured just outside the pantry door.

Clara held her breath. She scraped the metal again. *Tap-tap-tap.*

"Step back from the door," Marcus Vance said quietly from the outside.

A second later, there was the sound of metal clicking against the lock. Marcus wasn't just a billionaire; he was an ex-naval intelligence officer who had built his empire on tactical precision. Within four seconds, the lock clicked. The deadbolt turned, and the heavy door swung outward.

The dim golden light of the hallway spilled into the dark pantry.

Marcus Vance stood framed in the doorway, tall, broad-shouldered, wearing an immaculate bespoke charcoal suit. His slate-gray eyes swept the room and instantly locked onto Clara, crumpled on the floor in her torn dress, blood staining the marble beneath her, the dark purple bruises on her neck and wrists blazing like fresh paint under the corridor light.

Marcus didn't flinch, but the air around him dropped ten degrees. The muscle in his sharp jaw ticked with lethal restraint.

"Clara," he whispered.

"Marcus..." Clara gasped, clutching her belly as another violent contraction tore through her. "Julian... he's going to kill my baby. He took everything. Please... please don't let him touch my baby."

Marcus dropped to one knee without caring about his five-thousand-dollar trousers touching the dirty floor. He slipped off his suit jacket, wrapping it carefully around her shivering shoulders. His hands were large, warm, and remarkably gentle.

"Nobody is touching your child," Marcus said, his voice a low rumble of absolute certainty. "Can you stand?"

"I don't think so," she sobbed. "Something is wrong. The pain... it’s too early."

Marcus slid one powerful arm beneath her shoulders and the other under her knees, lifting her effortlessly into his chest. Clara buried her face in his crisp white shirt, the scent of cedarwood and rain grounding her spinning senses.

"Julian has two guards at the main entrance," Marcus said calmly, his eyes scanning the corridor. "And three private patrol cars outside. But they don't control the service exit through the wine cellar."

"He'll notice you're gone," Clara whimpered.

"Let him," Marcus replied, his eyes flashing like polished steel. "By midnight, Julian Thorne won't have an empire left to protect."
