Chapter 5 - The Contract of Blood

Marcus moved with the stealth of a predator, carrying Clara down the narrow spiral stairs leading into the estate’s expansive subterranean wine cellar. Above them, the heavy bass of the string quartet thudded through the floorboards, completely drowning out their escape.
"Marcus... why are you helping me?" Clara groaned, her face drenched in cold sweat as another contraction seized her. "You don't owe me anything. My father... he broke off his partnership with your family years ago."
Marcus didn't stop moving. He kicked open the reinforced metal door leading to the rear courtyard loading dock. "Your father didn't break that partnership, Clara. Julian Thorne forged the termination documents six years ago to isolate your family's assets. I've spent three years tracking Julian's shell companies in the Caymans. I didn't come to his party to invest in his company. I came to serve him with an involuntary bankruptcy petition."
Clara’s breath hitched. Julian’s entire rise to power had been an orchestrated fraud from the very beginning.
Outside, a sleek, black armored SUV was idling in the shadowy service lane with its headlights turned off. The back door flew open immediately. A woman in dark medical scrubs stepped out, her expression taut with urgency.
"Dr. Chen is my private physician," Marcus said, carefully transferring Clara into the plush leather interior of the SUV. "She has everything ready. We're ten minutes away from Vance Memorial Hospital."
Dr. Chen immediately cut away Clara’s dress, her face darkening as she examined the extensive contusions across Clara's torso. "Placental abruption risk," Dr. Chen barked to the driver. "Step on it, Frank! Siren mode, now!"
As the SUV surged forward, its engine roaring like a caged beast, Clara looked back through the tinted rear window.
High above, through the glass walls of the second-story grand ballroom, she could see Julian standing beneath the glittering three-million-dollar chandelier. He was raising a crystal flute of champagne, his arm draped possessively around Elena’s bare waist, grinning as the wealthy elite applauded him. He believed he was invincible. He believed he had finally erased Clara from the equation.
"Breathe, Clara," Dr. Chen commanded, placing an oxygen mask over her face. "Hold on for your baby!"
The monitor beside the medical seat began to beep erratically. Clara’s vision blurred at the edges, a tunnel of darkness swallowing the lights of the city.
"Marcus..." she whispered through the plastic mask, her fingers blindly reaching into the empty air.
Marcus caught her hand, his strong grip anchoring her to life. "I'm right here. You survive this, Clara. You survive this, and tomorrow, we burn his kingdom to the ground."
May you like
Her eyes fluttered shut as the siren’s wail filled the night.
