Chapter 7 - The Cold Awakening

For the next ten days, the private penthouse floor of Vance Memorial Hospital became Clara’s war room.
The timid, weeping girl who had cowered on the stairs had died on that cold marble floor. In her place stood a mother with nothing left to lose and everything to protect.
Under Dr. Chen’s rigorous care, Clara healed rapidly. Every morning, she spent hours holding her daughter, whom she named Victoria—a vow of the conquest to come. Every afternoon, she sat across from Marcus’s elite legal counsel and forensic accountants, dissecting Julian’s financial life with surgical precision.
"Elena Vance—no relation to me, thank God," Marcus explained, tossing a thick dossier onto the glass table. "Her real name is Elena Rostova. She’s an international corporate grifter. She targeted Julian three years ago when she realized how vulnerable your family trust was. She has drained eight million dollars from Julian’s secondary accounts into private Swiss vaults."
Clara skimmed through the surveillance photos. Julian and Elena were living openly in Clara’s family estate. In one photo, Elena was wearing Clara’s late mother’s vintage emerald necklace—a priceless family heirloom.
"They are hosting an exclusive press gala tomorrow night," Clara noted, her voice dangerously calm. "To celebrate the launch of 'Thorne Logistics Global'."
"Julian’s final hail mary," Marcus agreed, crossing his arms. "He needs forty million dollars from private investors to cover the checks he bounced to the port authorities. If he doesn't get the funding tomorrow, the SEC will seize his corporate offices by Monday morning."
Clara stood up from her chair, walking over to the full-length mirror in the hospital suite. Her collarbone was sharp, her posture perfectly erect. The purple bruises on her neck had faded to pale yellow shadows. Her long chestnut hair had been cut into a chic, razor-sharp bob that accentuated the high, aristocratic cheekbones she had inherited from her father.
She was no longer Julian’s victim. She was his reckoning.
"Marcus," Clara said, turning toward him, her gaze piercing. "Is the transfer of the holding company complete?"
Marcus reached into his pocket and placed a black velvet box and a set of heavy brass keys on the desk. "The court granted emergency injunctive relief this morning. You are the sole legal executor of the estate, the holding firm, and the offshore accounts. Julian Thorne is technically trespassing on your private property every second he breathes air in that house."
Clara picked up the keys, her fingers closing tightly around the cold metal.

"Good," she said, a wicked, breathtaking smile curving her lips. "Then let’s attend his party."
