Chapter 2 - The Shattered Threshold

The crack of Elena’s palm against Clara’s cheek echoed through the cavernous foyer, a sharp, violent punctuation mark to her humiliation. The sheer force of the blow snapped Clara’s head back, stealing what little air remained in her lungs. Blinded by sudden stars and burning agony, Clara’s fingers slipped completely from the polished mahogany banister.
"Julian!" she screamed, twisting her body with pure primal instinct.
She didn't try to protect her face. She didn't try to shield her ribs. In that split second of airborne terror, she curled into a tight ball around her swollen abdomen. Gravity seized her, and she tumbled down the final four steps, her shoulder crashing viciously against the cold Italian marble floor.
A sickening thud reverberated through the hall, followed by dead silence.
Clara lay paralyzed, a sharp, white-hot spasm tearing through her pelvic bone. Every muscle in her body screamed in protest, but her hands remained glued to her belly. Beneath the heavy fabric of her maternity dress, she prayed for the tiny, fluttering heartbeat that had kept her alive through months of psychological warfare.
Above her, Julian hadn't moved an inch to catch her. He stood on the landing, adjusting the diamond-encrusted cufflinks she had bought him for their first anniversary with her own trust fund money.
"Get up, Clara," Julian said, his tone entirely devoid of human empathy. "Stop acting like a Victorian consumptive. You barely rolled off the bottom step."
Elena let out a breathy, delicate laugh, tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear as she stepped over Clara’s trembling leg like one would avoid a puddle of mud. "Darling, look at her. She’s probably hoping the baby drops right here so she can milk you for child support. Stand up, Clara. The caterers are setting up the champagne tower in the dining room, and Julian’s key venture capitalists will be walking through those double doors in twenty minutes."
"My... my baby..." Clara gasped, tears carving hot tracks through the thick layer of cheap drugstore foundation Julian had forced her to wear to hide his fingerprints. A sharp pain pulsed deep in her lower back, and when she shifted, a damp warmth began to soak through the hem of her skirt.
Julian marched down the remaining steps, his Italian leather oxfords clicking ominously against the stone. He crouched down, his fingers gripping Clara’s jaw with enough force to bruise bone, forcing her face up toward the blinding glare of the three-million-dollar crystal chandelier.
"Listen to me very carefully," Julian hissed, his breath smelling of expensive scotch and mints. "You will go into my private study. You will sign the quitclaim deed transferring the rest of the grandfathered acreage into my LLC. If you make a scene, if you so much as utter a single syllable when the bell rings, I will call the county sanitarium. I have three psychiatric evaluations already drafted by Dr. Miller stating you are postpartum-delusional and a danger to yourself. You will lose this child before it takes its first breath."
Clara stared into the eyes of the man she had loved for seven years, searching for a shred of the gentle college graduate she had built a life with. There was nothing. Only a hollow, predatory void.
Before she could speak, the heavy bronze knocker against the estate’s front doors struck three heavy, authoritative blows.
Julian instantly released her jaw, his face smoothing out into a practiced, charismatic smile that belonged on the cover of Forbes. He straightened his tuxedo jacket and shot Elena a warning look. "Get her out of sight. Put her in the service pantry. Lock the deadbolt."
May you like
"With pleasure," Elena purred, grabbing Clara by the collar of her dress and dragging her brutally across the polished floor toward the shadows of the rear hall.
