Chapter 10 - A Fragile Peace

Three months later.

The Vance estate was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight. The gardens, which had once felt shadowed by tension and dread, were now alive with blooming white roses and the gentle murmur of marble fountains.

Clara stood by the nursery window on the second floor, gently folding a tiny, pale-blue baby blanket. Her belly was beautifully round now, carrying the twins to full term at thirty-six weeks. She wore a soft cream knit dress, her skin glowing with radiant health.

Warm, strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Julian rested his chin on her shoulder, his hands splaying over her stomach. As if on cue, two vigorous kicks pushed back against his palms, making Clara laugh softly.

"Active little troublemakers today," Julian whispered, kissing the curve of her neck.

"They take after their father," Clara replied, leaning back against his chest and closing her eyes, savoring the rare sensation of absolute peace.

The nightmare was finally behind them. Evelyn and Marcus Sterling had both entered guilty pleas to avoid life sentences without parole, resulting in decades-long prison terms in separate maximum-security facilities. The Vance conglomerate had experienced its most profitable quarter in company history, and Julian had permanently restructured the company’s charter so that full ownership belonged to a private trust dedicated to Clara and their children.

Julian spun Clara slowly around to face him. He looked down at her with an intensity that took her breath away.

Slowly, deliberately, he sank down onto one knee.

Clara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

From his pocket, Julian pulled a velvet box. Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless emerald ring surrounded by brilliant diamonds—an heirloom that had belonged to his late mother, the only woman who had truly loved his father before greed tore the family apart.

"Clara," Julian said, his deep voice thick with emotion. "When we first married, it was under the cloud of duty, contracts, and expectations. You walked through fire for me. You fought for our children when you were trapped in the dark. I don't just want to be your husband on paper anymore. I want to spend every sunrise proving that you are my entire world."

Tears of pure happiness spilled down Clara’s cheeks. "Julian... yes. A thousand times, yes!"

Julian slid the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a passionate, breathless embrace. For the first time in their lives, the future was theirs to write, filled with light, laughter, and unbreakable love.
