Chapter 9 - The Tables Turned

The boardroom erupted into total pandemonium. Board members leaped from their seats, shouting in outrage as federal agents flooded into the room.

"This is an outrage!" Marcus Sterling roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "You have no evidence! This is a desperate stunt by a failing CEO!"

"No evidence?" Julian laughed coldly.

Julian pulled a remote from his pocket and pressed a button. The giant presentation screens along the wall flashed to life.

Audio began to play through the room's surround sound speakers—crisp, clear, and damning:

*Evelyn’s voice: 'Make sure the dosage is high enough that the contractions cannot be reversed. If the babies die before the pool water drains, the coroner will rule it accidental asphyxiation.'*

*Brenda’s voice: 'What about Julian? He jumped into the pool after her.'*

*Evelyn’s voice: 'Then let him drown with them. It saves me the trouble of buying out his shares.'*

The board members gasped in absolute horror. Several turned their backs on Evelyn in disgust.

"Turn it off! Turn it off!" Evelyn screamed, her manicured composure shattering into frantic hysteria. She lunged toward the control console, but two federal marshals caught her by the arms, twisting them behind her back.

"Evelyn Sterling, you have the right to remain silent," the agent recited calmly, snapping cold steel handcuffs around her delicate wrists.

"Marcus! Help me!" she shrieked, looking at her biological father. "Do something!"

Marcus Sterling took two steps backward, his face gray with panic. "I don't know what she's talking about. She acted entirely on her own. I had no part in this!"

"Save your breath, Marcus," Julian said, stepping directly into the older man's path. "Brenda turned over the wire records from your offshore shell company in the Caymans. The SEC froze your assets twenty minutes ago. Your firm is finished, Marcus. And you’ll be spending the rest of your golden years in a federal penitentiary."

Marcus stared at Julian in stunned disbelief, his knees trembling as two more federal agents approached him with handcuffs.

Julian turned to the shell-shocked board members. He smoothed the lapels of his suit and looked across the table at Arthur Pendelton.

"Arthur," Julian said with calm authority. "Call the roll. The Vance Group is back under unified control."

The elderly lawyer smiled brightly, his eyes misty. "All in favor of confirming Julian Vance as sole managing trustee and permanent CEO?"
