Chapter 7 - The Hidden Safehouse

The rain had stopped by dawn, replaced by a thick blanket of fog hovering over the glassy waters of Lake Tahoe.

Tucked deep within five hundred acres of private pine forest stood the Vance family’s mountain sanctuary—a fortified modern fortress constructed of granite, steel, and bulletproof glass. Here, far away from city gossip and corporate spies, the air was crisp, clean, and safe.

Julian carried Clara onto the sunlit terrace overlooking the water, gently setting her down into a plush lounge chair draped in warm cashmere blankets.

"The doctor in the valley says your vitals have completely normalized," Julian said softly, kneeling beside her and placing a cup of herbal tea on the small wooden table. "The babies are resting. No more contractions."

Clara looked at him, studying the dark circles beneath his eyes and the tension carved into his handsome features. For the first time in months, she saw the vulnerability beneath his formidable exterior.

"Julian," she said softly, reaching out to touch his cheek. "Why didn't you tell me about your father's will sooner? Why did you keep all of this hidden from me?"

Julian sighed, leaning into her warm touch. "Because I wanted to protect you from the rot inside my family. When my father died, he left behind a viper’s nest. Evelyn and Marcus were already circling like vultures. I thought if I kept you detached, if I kept our marriage out of the corporate press, they wouldn't see you as a target."

He shook his head with bitter regret. "I was wrong. By trying to shield you from the truth, I left you vulnerable to their traps. If anything had happened to you or our children in that pool... I would have torn this world apart with my bare hands."

Clara smiled faintly, her eyes glistening. "We survived it, Julian. Together. But what about the board meeting? It's tonight. If you’re here with me, Evelyn will take control."

Julian stood up, a dark, triumphant smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"She thinks she will," Julian said, checking his watch. "Brenda broke after twenty minutes of interrogation by federal authorities. She handed over every text message, every wire transfer, and the encrypted offshore bank account Marcus Sterling used to buy the synthetic oxytocin."

He leaned down and pressed a long, passionate kiss against Clara’s lips, his hand resting tenderly over the curve of her belly where two tiny kicks responded to his voice.

"I’m flying to the city by helicopter in an hour," Julian whispered against her ear. "Rest here with Miller guarding the gates. Tonight, I take our family’s honor back."
