Chapter 2 - The Emergency Release

The crimson glow of the underwater lights reflected off the sleek glass barrier, painting the pool in shades of danger. Beneath the surface, Julian’s lungs burned. His muscles screamed in protest as he held Clara tightly with one arm, his fingers clawing against the reinforced seam that separated them from air. Clara’s eyes were fluttering shut, her trembling hands slipping from his chest.
On the pool deck, Evelyn’s pale fingers hovered over the unmarked black toggle beside the master control panel. For three excruciating seconds, she didn't press it. She simply stared down through the glass, her expression an icy mask of calculated malice.
"Julian," she murmured, loud enough only for the silent room to hear, "you should have signed the trust over to me when you had the chance."
With a sudden, violent motion, she slammed the heel of her hand onto the toggle.
A deafening hydraulic hiss vibrated through the water. Julian braced himself, expecting the glass to drop lower to crush them, but instead, the pool's high-velocity drainage vents roared to life. Millions of gallons of chlorinated water were suddenly violently sucked toward the deep end. The sheer suction created a vicious vortex, pulling them down toward the drain grates while simultaneously peeling back the upper barrier by six inches.
Julian didn't hesitate. With every ounce of adrenaline coursing through his veins, he kicked violently against the current. He shoved Clara up through the narrow opening first.
"Clara! Grab the rim!" he gasped, his head breaking the surface just as his shoulders wedged into the gap.
Clara coughed violently, vomiting swallowed water onto the polished Italian tile. Julian hauled his upper body through the opening, the fiberglass edge tearing through his linen shirt and slicing deep into his ribs. He didn't care about the blood. He dragged himself onto the deck, rolled over, and pulled Clara into his lap.
"Breathe, sweetheart. Look at me. Breathe!" Julian pressed his trembling hands against her shivering face.
Clara gasped for air, clutching her swollen belly protectively. "The... the baby, Julian... I felt a cramp..."
Julian spun around, his jaw locked in pure, murderous fury. The pool deck was empty. The glass doors that led to the private elevator were still sliding shut, Evelyn’s silhouette vanishing into the dim corridor beyond. She hadn't stayed to watch them drown; she had triggered the siphon to ensure their demise looked like an unfortunate mechanical malfunction.
"Security!" Julian roared into the mansion's intercom panel on the wall, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Lock down the perimeter! Call Dr. Harrison immediately! If Evelyn steps past the main gate, take her down!"
He lifted Clara into his arms, ignoring the agonizing sting across his torso. As he rushed down the marble hallway, Clara gripped his collar, her voice barely a whisper.
"Julian... it wasn't an accident," she sobbed softly against his neck. "She told me... she told me your father's will was never meant for our child."

Julian’s heart turned to ice. "Don't speak. Save your strength. Nobody is taking anything from you—not as long as I draw breath."
