Chapter 11 - The Knock in the Night

Midnight arrived with the roar of an unseasonal, violent thunderstorm.
Thunder rattled the heavy glass panes of the master bedroom, sending jagged flashes of lightning across the dark ceiling. Outside, ancient oak trees bent violently against torrential winds, their branches clawing like skeletons against the roof.
Clara slept peacefully in the center of the grand bed, exhausted from the day's excitement.
Julian sat at the mahogany desk across the room, reviewing the final security protocol updates for the private wing of the maternity hospital scheduled for next week. The glowing screen of his laptop illuminated the sharp, tired contours of his face.
Suddenly, his encrypted satellite phone buzzed violently on the desk.
Julian picked it up immediately, keeping his voice to a whisper so as not to disturb Clara. "Julian here."
"Julian, it’s David," his cousin’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and filled with static and panic.
Julian stood up straight, his instincts instantly flaring red. "David? What's going on? You're breaking up."
"The prison transport... north of the state line..." David's voice surged through the static. "The armored bus carrying Evelyn to the federal detention facility was ambushed an hour ago! Smoke grenades, armor-piercing rounds... high-level military precision!"
Julian’s blood ran cold. "Where is she, David?"
"Three guards are dead, Julian!" David yelled over the howling storm on his end. "She didn't just escape—Marcus Sterling didn't fund this! We found the mercenary markings. It's the Moreau Syndicate from Europe... the ones your father dealt with twenty years ago!"
*Crack!*
A bolt of lightning struck the transformer outside the estate.
Instantly, the entire mansion plunged into pitch-black darkness. The steady hum of the air conditioning died. The security panels on the walls beeped twice and went dead as the backup generators inexplicably failed to kick in.
"Julian? Julian, do you copy?!" David’s voice squealed into dead static as the cell signal vanished completely.
Silence. Heavy, suffocating silence filled the room, punctuated only by the pounding rain on the glass.
Julian dropped the phone, drawing his customized semi-automatic from his shoulder holster with fluid speed. He moved silently toward the bed to protect Clara.
Suddenly, from the corner of the nursery adjoining their bedroom, a faint crackle of static echoed through the darkness.
It was the baby monitor.
The digital screen on the nursery monitor flickered to life, glowing with an eerie, sickly green night-vision light.
Julian froze, his gun raised, staring at the small monitor.
Through the speaker came the rhythmic, horrifying sound of a woman humming a soft, twisted lullaby.
Then, a pair of cold, pale eyes leaned directly into the camera lens in the empty nursery.

A familiar, chilling whisper hissed through the tiny speaker:
*"Did you really think the water was the end, Julian? We’re coming up the stairs."*
