Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush

At seven-fifty-five PM, the atmosphere inside the top-floor boardroom of the Vance Conglomerate was suffocating.
Twenty board members, representing billions of dollars in global capital, sat around the oval table. At the head of the table sat Evelyn, radiant in an emerald power suit, accompanied by Marcus Sterling, who sat beside her as an "external financial advisor."
Arthur Pendelton sat near the front, looking pale and glancing nervously at the grandfather clock ticking toward eight o'clock.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Evelyn began, her voice carrying an air of sorrowful authority. "We all know why we are gathered here tonight. Tomorrow is Julian’s thirty-second birthday. Under ordinary circumstances, the inheritance clause would activate."
She paused, dabbing a theatrical tear from the corner of her eye with a silk handkerchief.
"Tragically, as many of you have read in the leaks, my dear brother has suffered an immense psychological breakdown following the unfortunate loss of his unborn child and Clara’s hospitalization. He has abandoned his duties and disappeared."
A murmur of shock and distress rippled through the older board members.
"Therefore," Marcus Sterling spoke up, his voice booming with authority, "under Section 14 of the Vance Trust Charter, we must declare Julian incapacitated and authorize the immediate transfer of interim voting authority to Evelyn Vance. We must protect the company from stock devaluation."
"I second the motion," one of Marcus's bribed board members announced.
"Let us call for a vote," Evelyn declared, raising her hand with an arrogant smile. "All in favor of transferring control—"
*BANG!*
The heavy mahogany double doors blew inward with the force of an explosion.
Two armed federal marshals stepped inside, followed immediately by Julian Vance.
Julian wore a sharp charcoal-gray three-piece suit. He looked commanding, untouchable, and radiating an aura of lethal power. Beside him walked United States Assistant Attorney General David Vance, Julian’s estranged cousin, carrying two thick leather briefcases.
"Before you vote, Evelyn," Julian’s voice sliced through the room like a razor, "you might want to let the board review the updated agenda."
Evelyn jumped to her feet, knocking her chair backward. "Julian! You... you have no right to disrupt this official meeting!"

"Actually, he has every right," Assistant Attorney General Vance announced, placing a certified federal warrant onto the center of the table. "Because as of ten minutes ago, Evelyn Sterling is under arrest for attempted murder, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud."
