Chapter 9 - The Downfall

The mansion’s grand courtyard, which only twenty-four hours earlier had hosted California’s elite in glamorous silk and velvet, was now overrun by federal investigators and state troopers.

Margaret Vance was led out of the front entrance in handcuffs, her expensive black gown torn and her makeup smeared with sweat and blood from the cut on her cheek.

Reporters from local news stations, alerted by the late-night raid, had already gathered outside the iron gates, flashing cameras blinding Margaret as she was forced toward the back of a police cruiser.

"Let go of me!" Margaret screeched, thrashing against the officers' hold. "Do you know who I am? I am Margaret Vance! I built this city!"

Emily and Julian walked slowly across the gravel driveway, wrapped in gray emergency blankets provided by the paramedics.

Margaret caught sight of Emily and stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes burned with a venomous hatred. "You think you've won, you little street rat? You have nothing! You are nothing! You'll never survive in this world!"

Emily stepped forward, dropping the blanket from her shoulders. She stood tall, her spine straight, radiating the quiet dignity that her mother had passed down to her.

"I am Emily Vance," she said clearly, her voice carrying over the hum of the crowd. "And the only thing you built was a fortress of lies."

An agent approached Emily, holding an evidence bag. Inside it lay the antique gold necklace with the radiant blue gemstone.

"Miss Vance," the agent said respectfully, "the estate’s bank vault in San Francisco was opened an hour ago under emergency warrant. The original will of your grandfather, Thomas Vance, was authenticated. You are the sole surviving legal heir to the Vance Trust and all its assets."

Margaret let out a strangled sob as she was pushed into the cruiser. The car door slammed, cutting off her cries, and the cruiser sped away into the night, sirens wailing.

Julian turned to Emily, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It’s over, Emily. You brought Evelyn home."
