Chapter 11 - The Shadow in the Will

The Evelyn Carter Foundation gala was an undeniable triumph. Over four million dollars was raised in the first two hours, and the atmosphere on the terrace was charged with joy and hope.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Pacific Ocean in shades of crimson and violet, Arthur approached Emily with a silver tray. On the tray sat a glass of sparkling cider and a thick, wax-sealed manila envelope.

"Miss Emily," Arthur murmured, his expression unusually grim despite the festivities around them. "A courier just delivered this by hand. It came directly from the state penitentiary where Margaret is being held."

Emily’s smile faded. "What could she possibly want now?"

"The courier was instructed to give it to you and you alone," Arthur said quietly. "He claimed Margaret told her lawyers that if she didn't send it today, you would never know what truly killed your mother."

A chill washed over Emily, extinguishing the warmth of the evening. She took the envelope and stepped away from the crowd, finding a quiet corner in the estate’s private library. Julian followed closely behind her, closing the double doors to seal off the noise of the gala.

With trembling fingers, Emily broke the red wax seal and pulled out the contents.

Inside was a single handwritten letter from Margaret, alongside a faded medical dossier dated eighteen years ago—and an official birth certificate that Emily had never seen before.

Margaret’s jagged handwriting read:

*My dear Emily,*

*You thought you won. You thought putting me in a cage would settle the score. But you are so blind, just like your mother was.*

*You think I tried to kill Evelyn because I was greedy? Look at the dossier, little niece. Look at the date of your birth, and look at the DNA registry Thomas Vance ordered before he died.*

*Evelyn was not my father's biological daughter. She was adopted from a family that had spent fifty years destroying ours.*

*And more importantly... you were not Evelyn's only child.*

Emily’s heart stopped.

Her hands shook so violently she could barely hold the paper. Beneath Margaret’s letter was an official birth record from St. Jude’s Hospital in Los Angeles, dated the very same day Emily was born.

There were two names listed under the delivery record:

*Baby A: Emily Vance.*

*Baby B: Twin Brother — Status: Transferred to Private Custody.*

Before Emily could breathe, the library door clicked open behind them.

Emily and Julian turned around. Standing in the shadow of the doorway was not a guest, nor a servant. It was a young man in his late teens, wearing a dark jacket, his face partly obscured by the dim light.

As he stepped into the glow of the desk lamp, Emily felt the floor drop out beneath her feet.

The young man had her exact cheekbones. Her exact jawline. And around his neck hung an antique silver chain, bearing a pendant shaped like the other half of the crescent moon.

He looked at Emily, his voice cold, steady, and chillingly familiar:

"Hello, sister. Did you really think Margaret was the only one who wanted our family's fortune?"
