Chapter 2 - The Humiliation

The opulent ballroom fell dead silent, the soft jazz melody fading into an unbearable stillness. All eyes were locked on Emily Carter. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Margaret Vance stood rigidly before her, her knuckles pale as she clutched the antique blue gemstone against her collarbone. Her breath hitched, and beneath her flawless foundation, an uncharacteristic gray pallor crept across her cheeks. For a fleeting second, Margaret didn't look like California’s most untouchable matriarch; she looked like a woman who had just seen the devil herself.
"Security!" Margaret’s voice broke the trance, sharp and shrill as breaking glass. "Get this lunatic away from me immediately!"
"Ma'am, please, look under the pendant," Emily choked out, taking an involuntary step forward. "There’s an engraving on the rim. Three stars beneath the crescent moon! My mother showed it to me before she got sick! She called it her northern star!"
Two towering guards in crisp black suits materialized out of the shadows. Before Emily could say another word, heavy hands clamped down on her arms. One guard twisted her backward, sending the silver champagne tray crashing to the marble floor. Crystal glasses shattered into hundreds of glittering shards, splashing vintage champagne across the hems of multi-thousand-dollar designer gowns.
"Get your filthy hands off her!" a sharp, commanding voice rang out from the crowd.
Julian Vance, Margaret’s twenty-four-year-old stepson, stepped forward through the ring of stunned socialites. Julian had never fit into his stepmother’s polished, superficial world. He had sharp hazel eyes and an unruly fringe of dark hair that defied high-society standards. He looked down at Emily, then at Margaret, his brow furrowing as he noticed his stepmother’s trembling hands.
"Stand down, Marcus," Julian commanded the security guard. "You don't need to manhandle an eighteen-year-old girl."
"She’s an intruder, Julian!" Margaret spat, her voice tight with panic disguised as righteous fury. "She’s unstable! She attacked me and tried to steal an irreplaceable family heirloom! Have her escorted off the estate this instant, and call the police!"
"I didn't attack you!" Emily cried out, hot tears spilling down her cheeks as the guards dragged her backward across the foyer. "My mother’s name was Sarah! Sarah Carter! Why do you have her necklace?"
Margaret flinched as if Emily had struck her across the face. For half a heartbeat, sheer terror flashed through her eyes. But she quickly recovered, lifting her chin with icy arrogance. "Throw her onto the street. If she ever steps foot on Vance property again, press full charges for trespassing and harassment."
The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut in Emily's face, plunging her into the cold coastal drizzle outside. Stripped of her maid’s apron, soaked in rain, and bruised by the guard's grip, Emily stood at the bottom of the mansion's sweeping driveway.
She wasn't crazy. She had lived in poverty with her mother in a dingy one-bedroom apartment in Fresno. She had watched her mother work three jobs while clutching that exact same pendant during feverish nights. Her mother had never parted with it—until the night before she died in the county hospital, when the necklace mysteriously vanished from her bedside table.
Behind the second-story window of the Vance manor, Margaret stood in the darkness, watching Emily through the glass. Her hand trembled as she unclasped the blue pendant, turned it over, and felt the tiny engraved stars beneath the crescent.

"She has Evelyn's eyes," Margaret whispered to the empty room, her voice shaking with dread. "How is she alive?"
