Chapter 4 - The Butler's Confession

Julian stepped inside, his eyes drifting over the bare, modest apartment before settling on Emily. He didn't carry the haughtiness of his family; instead, there was an intense, restless curiosity in his gaze.
"You said your mother’s name was Sarah," Julian said without preamble. "Did she have another name?"
"No. Sarah Carter. That’s all she ever told me," Emily said, her guard still up. She pulled the folded paper from her pocket and handed it to him. "She wrote this before she died. She told me to find someone named Arthur."
Julian gasped when he read the jagged script. "Arthur Pendelton. He was the head butler of the Vance estate for forty years. Margaret forced him into retirement three months ago and dumped him in an assisted living facility in Ojai."
"Why would she do that?"
"Because Arthur was the only living person who worked for the family before Margaret took control," Julian replied grimly. "We need to talk to him right now."
An hour later, Julian’s black sedan pulled up to the shaded courtyard of Whispering Oaks, a quiet nursing home nestled in the Ojai valley. Julian guided Emily through the sunlit corridors to a corner room where an elderly man with thinning silver hair sat beside an open window, a chessboard resting on his lap.
"Arthur?" Julian spoke softly.
The old man looked up, his clouded blue eyes blinking behind thick spectacles. When his gaze shifted from Julian to Emily, he froze. His cup of tea slipped from his trembling fingers, shattering onto the hardwood floor.
"Evelyn...?" Arthur breathed, his voice quivering with absolute disbelief. "Dear God in heaven... Evelyn, you’ve come back."
"No, sir," Emily whispered, stepping forward with tears welling in her eyes. "My name is Emily. My mother was Sarah."
Arthur reached out with a frail, shaking hand, touching Emily’s cheek as if confirming she was made of flesh and bone. "You have her eyes. Her exact smile. Sarah was the name she chose when she fled into the night with you in her arms. But she was born Evelyn Vance. The firstborn daughter. The rightful heir to the Vance empire."
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. "What are you talking about?"
"Margaret was not an only child," Arthur began, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "She was the younger, envious sister. Twenty years ago, when your grandfather passed away, his will left eighty percent of the estate, the mining trusts, and the family sapphire to Evelyn. Margaret was given only a modest allowance."

Arthur looked toward the door, checking for listeners before continuing. "The night your grandfather was buried, Evelyn discovered Margaret had been embezzling millions from the family charity. When Evelyn threatened to report her, Margaret orchestrated a car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway. Evelyn survived, pregnant and terrified. She realized Margaret would stop at nothing to eliminate her and her unborn child. So Evelyn vanished. She traded her identity to protect you."
