Chapter 7 - The Offer on the Cliff

Margaret wore a long cashmere coat, her hair pinned back perfectly, yet her face was contorted into a mask of pure malice.
"I knew Arthur would sing like a canary," Margaret said, stepping inside the mausoleum. "He always was overly sentimental about my pathetic sister."
"She wasn't pathetic, Margaret!" Emily shouted, stepping in front of Julian to shield the ledger. "She was your sister! You tried to murder her!"
"I took what belonged to me!" Margaret snapped, her calm facade fracturing. "Evelyn was weak! She wanted to donate half the family fortune to public housing and medical research. She would have destroyed this family's legacy! Father was a fool to choose her!"
"You're the monster here, Margaret," Julian said coldly. "And this is over. We have the ledger. We have the key to the bank vault."
Margaret let out a dry, chilling laugh. "You think a dusty book and an old key will save you? Who do you think the district attorney will believe? A registered maid with zero credit history and my rebellious stepson, or the woman who funds their political campaigns?"
Marcus drew his weapon, pointing it directly at Julian’s chest.
"Hand me the book and the key, Emily," Margaret ordered, extending a manicured hand. "Do it now, and I will wire five million dollars to a Swiss account in your name. You can leave California and never look back. Live like a princess. Or refuse, and both of you will have a tragic diving accident off the cliffs tonight."
Emily stared at the woman before her. Five million dollars would end all her worries forever. She could buy a home, go to college, and live in peace.
Then she remembered her mother coughing blood in that cramped apartment, stitching torn clothes under the flickering bulb, yet always kissing Emily goodnight with absolute love and grace.
"My mother died with empty hands, but she had a clean soul," Emily whispered, looking Margaret dead in the eye. "You can keep your blood money."

With sudden agility, Emily hurled the heavy brass key straight into Margaret's face.
